What are the responsibilities and job description for the Credit Counselor - Financial Outreach position at Pelican State Credit Union?
Pelican State CU’s award-winning Financial Outreach Team is looking for a Credit Counselor to join the family! We’re seeking a seasoned employee with experience in reading and understanding credit reports, presenting to small and large groups, and excellent member service. Regular job duties may include but are not limited to providing counseling and recommendations after thorough review of the member’s financial circumstances, managing the Financial Outreach Program members’ action plans for increased financial stability and success, and educating members one-on-one and in groups through counseling sessions and financial wellness workshops. Counselors must be willing to teach financial wellness topics to people of all ages and backgrounds, as well as participate in community events and projects centered around financial wellness. This position will have a special emphasis on helping the branch grow through financial education and community outreach. Candidates will be asked to give a short presentation during the interview process. Some weekends and nights are required. Home office can be in Hammond, Covington, or Slidell. Territory will cover those areas.
A Day in the Life of a credit counselor INCLUDES:
Performing credit and debt counseling to seek all possible solutions to resolve members’ financial problems and explain benefits to members.
Performing housing counseling for acquisition, delinquency, refinancing, and reverse mortgages.
Managing and monitoring all client files enrolled in the Financial Outreach Program.
Maintaining client database with updated statistics on short- and long-term goal completion.
Attending after-hours or weekend financial education events as needed.
credit counselor Skills and qualifications include:
Associate degree in social work, human services, financial planning, education, communications, or a related field. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education.
3 years of experience in credit/financial counseling, reviewing/analyzing credit reports, community outreach, financial education, lending, and/or financial services.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Excellent oral, written, and telephone communication skills.
Spanish speaking is a plus.
Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and member service skills.
Proficient knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday
8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Some weekends and after-hours may be required.
Travel
Travel is necessary for this position and mileage reimbursement is available for those who qualify.
Work Site Location
This position can be based in our Hammond, Covington, or Slidell branch.
The Credit Counselor will serve Hammond, Covington, and Slidell.
