We are seeking a Bridge Tunnel Operations Crewmember to be an integral part of the overall traffic incident management strategy and responsible for vehicle inspection and facility security. This position works primarily in inspection booths on the tunnel facility grounds and will work independently, as directed and monitored by the VDOT Representative.
This position offers a consistent, set schedule with a guaranteed 40 hours a week, paid training, and opportunities for overtime available.

A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required for this role. Essential Functions:
- Occupy inspection station locations, stop, and inspect vehicles for over-height, hazardous materials, facility security threats, and violations. Document issues and vehicles encountered, and always notify the Operations Crew Lead and control room of the status.
- Provide security by standing watch at various stations, remaining alert and highly visible, investigating and reporting suspicious activities, directing and controlling traffic throughout the facility safely and professionally, and utilizing appropriate traffic control techniques (hand signals, whistle, voice, STOP/SLOW paddles, etc.).
- Possess the physical ability to flag high-volume traffic, and prolonged standing in adverse weather conditions.
- Operate hand tools to include, but not limited to, shovels, brooms, etc.
- Assist State/Local Police, fire, rescue, other emergency, and maintenance personnel in emergencies and routine operations, using pertinent safety techniques (CPR/First Aid, etc.) and equipment. Maintain a thorough knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and other applicable regulations. Perform necessary housekeeping duties to ensure a clean and safe work area. Operate a patrol vehicle, monitor roadway conditions, and assist stranded or disabled motorists on the roadway.
- Respond to motorists and coworkers by providing clear, accurate information and directions in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner. Ready to respond in case of an emergency in the tunnel.
- Perform inspections of assigned work areas including buildings, facility equipment, etc. Perform daily housekeeping duties to provide a safe, clean work environment.
- Perform facility and grounds inspections including multi-story industrial buildings.
- Possess the ability to process over-height violations at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT) including violator vehicle escorts and turn-around procedures.
- Provide wide-load escorts at MMMBT and HRBT utilizing vehicular equipment.
- Provide incident support including scene clean up, tunnel evacuations, traffic control following detour protocols, etc.
- Possess the ability to operate various types of computer equipment and software.
- Possess the ability to utilize portable and permanent mount two-way radio equipment and articulate clear and concise communications.
- Perform light to moderate manual labor including, but not limited to, standing, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting to 50 pounds, walking, and sitting for prolonged periods.
- Complete accurate and concise records utilizing Inspection Station Reports, Vehicle Inspections, Response Unit Inspections, etc.
- The schedule for this position is 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts, with overtime available. First shift, 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM, second shift, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, or third shift from 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM. Shifts are only available based on need at the time of hire.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of traffic control operations and extensive customer service experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Two (2) to Three (3) years of experience directing and controlling traffic, conducting and documenting vehicle inspections.
- Full range of physical mobility, visual perception, and general good health.
- Capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Hampton Roads Interstate and local roadways.
- Computer literate; Windows-based application experience.
- Experience in radio and phone communications.
- General knowledge of vehicle mechanics and repair.
- Schedule flexibility.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
- Virginia Driver's License (in good standing).
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - strongly desired.
