PEMEX Deer Park is a highly complex refinery located 18 miles east of Houston in Deer Park, TX, and is a part of the PEMEX group which is a fully integrated oil company in the Americas, working across the entire value chain : exploration, production, industrial processing / refining, logistics and marketing. Job Purpose : The Senior Corrosion Material Engineer will provide technical support across the Refinery production areas to sustain stable operations, assure plant changes, plan for maintenance outages, and initiate value-add capital projects.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities :

  • Provide technical support to develop design requirements for plant changes and projects within the Pressure Equipment engineering discipline. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, industry codes and standards, company best practices, and site-specific requirements.

Participate in various phases of plant change management and project meetings, offering key input on selecting optimum materials, identifying potential damage mechanisms, developing fabrication requirements, and creating in-service inspection strategies and corrosion control measures. Provide technical assurance and approvals for related Management of Change (MOC) tasks.

  • Review and provide technical assurance for project specifications and vendor submittals, including Bill of Materials (BOM), Welding Procedures / PQR, MTR, etc.
  • Lead CCD review and revalidation. Collaborate with Pressure Equipment Inspectors and Engineers to integrate CCD recommendations into equipment and piping inspection strategies. Provide subject matter expertise during risk-based inspection (RBI) evaluations, perform IOW monitoring, and initiate mitigation recommendations when threats or opportunities are identified.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to inspectors, process engineering counterparts, and production team members during abnormal operations and major plant maintenance activities. Conduct causal learning investigations and failure analyses to understand the root cause of uncommon damage mechanisms and provide recommendations for repair plans related to material selection and welding.
  • Participate in unit process hazard analysis (PHA), offering technical input on chemical inhibition, water treatment, and other activities requiring expertise in materials and corrosion.
  • Represent the company at technical conferences and industry forums to develop professionally and bring new learnings back to the company for continuous improvement. Update relevant Engineering Practices based on industry knowledge growth and propose improvements to enhance process safety and reliability.
  • Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience :

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for any employer other than the current one.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in Pressure (static) Equipment Engineering within the refining, petrochemical, or related industries.
  • Proficiency in material selection and fabrication processes (e.g., casting, forging, welding, rolling). Experience with metallic materials (e.g., Steel, Stainless Steel, Nickel-based Alloys) is essential. Knowledge of nonmetallic materials is a plus.
  • Expertise in identifying and mitigating damage mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in using relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC Section II, Section IX, API 571) for problem-solving.
  • Experience in reviewing and developing Corrosion Control Documents (CCD).
  • Inspection and Mechanical Integrity :
  • Working knowledge of inspection practices and familiarity with inspection data management systems.

  • Familiarity with common and advanced NDE techniques.
  • Capability to develop equipment inspection strategies based on API codes and standards or risk-based inspection methodologies. Familiarity with ASME Section V and API 580 is a plus.
  • Industry Experience :
  • Practical knowledge of refinery work processes (IOW, MOC, MTO), production unit configurations, and process equipment essentials (pressure vessels, piping, exchangers, heaters, storage tanks).

  • Experience with design engineering practices and general project procedures.
  • Experience with E2G EP or Shell DEP is a plus. Relevant experience in petrochemical and other process industries is also beneficial.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple activities based on impact. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams to achieve common goals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interface with personnel from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization.
