We offer rural living, fantastic recreational opportunities, and beautiful scenery.Full Wage Range: $6,468.24 - 8,202.66 per monthHiring Range: $6,468.24 - 7,274.83 per month DOQ SIGN-ON BONUS: $10,000.00 Sign-on Bonus, subject to all required taxes, withholdings, and the County Policy, to be paid in two payments. 50% of the bonus will be paid on the next regularly scheduled pay date after your first day of employment with Pend Oreille County; the remaining 50% of the bonus will be paid after one year of County service. Restrictions apply.JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney, the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney represents Pend Oreille County and the State of Washington in criminal and civil cases. This role primarily involves managing felony caseloads in Superior Court, preparing cases for trial, and handling appeals when necessary. The position also supports county departments, boards, and officials by providing legal advice, representing the county in civil litigation, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Collaboration with law enforcement, public agencies, and county departments is essential.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Criminal Prosecution: Evaluate, file, and prepare felony cases for trial, sentencing, and appeals.Conduct pretrial hearings, jury/bench trials, and appellate brief preparation.Collaborate with law enforcement on investigations and legal procedures.Provide guidance on arrests, search warrants, and legal charges.Civil Representation: Represent the county in civil court actions, including zoning, land use, and tax foreclosure cases.Advise and work closely with county boards, commissions, elected officials, and departments.Defend the county in lawsuits and manage risk in collaboration with insurance providers.Legal Research and Advising: Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, and provide legal guidance.Stay updated on legal changes affecting the county, including statutes, case law, and policies.Advise law enforcement on legal procedures and respond to public disclosure requests.Administration and Collaboration: Coordinate with victim/witness staff for trial preparation.Draft and amend county resolutions, ordinances, and policies.Work with other attorneys, county officials, and agencies to ensure smooth legal operations.General Duties: Attend training and maintain compliance with ethical and professional standards.Operate office and courtroom technology effectively.Perform other tasks as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of Washington state criminal and civil laws, court procedures, and municipal law.Proficient in legal research, evidence evaluation, and case preparation.Skilled in presenting legal arguments and maintaining effective working relationships.Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, and operate under pressure.Strong communication and organizational skills, with proficiency in office technology and legal software.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.Licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association.Minimum of three years of experience in criminal prosecution or municipal law preferred.Knowledge of civil and administrative procedures is required.LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid driver’s license.Pass a background and driving record check.Maintain compliance with Washington State Bar requirements.WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Office and courtroom settings with frequent interruptions and deadlines.May require travel within the county and attendance at meetings or conferences.Physical requirements include the ability to walk, sit, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform tasks requiring close and distance vision.Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with no telecommuting permitted.This position requires professionalism, discretion, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations effectively while maintaining the highest ethical standards.
