POSITION TITLE: HVAC Mechanic II
SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT: HVAC Department
LOCATION: Central Office
PAY GRADE: 67 FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Utility Director
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM; occasional evenings and weekends
MONTHS/YEAR: 12
POSITION PURPOSE
An employee in this role is responsible for constructing, modifying, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and environmental control systems. This position may involve serving as a technical expert in one or more areas of HVAC. The employee assesses heating and cooling requirements, provides recommendations to optimize system performance, and resolves most issues independently. While errors may not be immediately evident, they can lead to inefficiencies or potentially hazardous situations. Work is performed with minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC, Building Automation Systems, and refrigeration principles
- Proficiency in the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in HVAC maintenance and repair
- Strong understanding of Reciprocating Scroll and Screw compressor design and operation
- Foundational knowledge of electrical systems and Building Automation Controls
- Competence in diagnosing equipment malfunctions, controls and determining effective repair solutions
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, blueprints, and technical diagrams
- Analytical skills to evaluate building HVAC and Controls needs and recommend modifications
- Demonstrated ability to excel in a dynamic, deadline-oriented, team environment
Education, Training, and Experience
- Significant experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and related environmental systems
Certification and License Requirements
- Must possess a valid State HVAC license, as per regulations from the Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors
- Maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in accordance with State of NC requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Troubleshoot and repair advanced HVAC systems, including chillers and control systems; assess required parts and establish work plans
- Evaluate HVAC system needs and recommend installations or upgrades for optimal performance
- Research and propose new equipment or operational procedures for enhanced functionality
- Interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams, and technical documents
- Install HVAC systems, including heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and environmental control equipment
- Perform electrical wiring for controls and related components.
