POSITION PURPOSE
To ensure to assist in providing safe and efficient transportation for the students in Pender County Schools
POSITION ANALYSIS
Transportation mechanic is a vital employee of the Transportation Department. Mechanic must be responsible and never compromise safety
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance
- Skills to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire Replacement, fuel dispensing, washing vehicles, etc.
- Ability to physically perform minor repairs
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Some experience and training with vehicle operation, maintenance and Repairs are preferred
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of high school diploma or equalivant
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold or acquire North Carolina School Bus Inspector Certification
- Must hold or acquire North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with, P & S endorsements
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A two year degree or equivalent
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform general maintenance as needed
- Perform monthly inspections for school buses and activity buses
- Lubricate moving parts of vehicle chassis
- Check, add, and replace brakes and steering fluids
- Install air, oil, water and other filters on vehicles
- Replace wiper blades and fan belts
- Rotate, replace and repair truck size tires.
- Replace brake linings on Buses and various vehicles
- Drain and clean radiators
- Inspect exterior and interior of vehicles for defects
- Remove minor dents and other body repairs
- Check and repair doors and wheelchairs lifts on buses
- Perform any other duties assigned by Shop Foreman or Director of Transportation
WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift 50 pounds of material repeatedly on a daily basis.
- Must be able to step up & down repeatedly and get in and out of vehicles
- Must be able to access “underneath” School Buses and other vehicles to change oil, grease, and service, etc.
- Ability to work with and around Hazardous Materials such as; Automotive Batteries, Automatic Transmission fluid, Anti-Freeze, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor setting, with hot, humid or cold conditions.
