Random House Children’s Books is seeking a passionate and creative Editor to join its nonfiction publishing team. The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in children's publishing, excellent editorial skills, and a keen interest in developing high-quality non-fiction titles for young readers. The Editor will work closely with the Editorial Director to acquire, develop, and edit a diverse range of illustrated nonfiction. The list of approximately 30 titles per year will include reference books, picture books, readers, and other highly illustrated nonfiction formats and categories.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Works with the Editorial Director to identify and acquire new titles for the nonfiction program.
  • Works with licensors to brainstorm ideas for new books and series.
  • Develops and edits manuscripts, ensuring high editorial standards and alignment with the division's vision and goals.
  • Hires and manages external content contributors – including writers and packagers – where necessary.
  • Coordinates with the design, production, marketing, and sales teams to ensure successful publication and promotion of titles.
  • Writes and edits text for book jackets, web copy, TI sheets and other promotional materials.
  • Works with PRH metadata experts to ensure books are best positioned for online discoverability.
  • Assists with the management of project timelines and budgets to ensure the timely delivery and financial success of each title.
  • Represents RHCB nonfiction publishing at both internal and industry meetings.


Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years of editorial experience in children's publishing, with a focus on children’s illustrated nonfiction
  • Strong understanding of the children's nonfiction market, including current trends and key competitors
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with authors, illustrators, and colleagues
  • Passion for children's literature and a commitment to creating high-quality, engaging non-fiction titles
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with editorial software and tools


The salary for this position is $73,500.00.
All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
