THE COLLEGE
Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle. Port Angeles is two hours from Seattle and a one-hour ferry ride to Victoria, Canada. THE POSITION
The Corrections Education Navigator serves Peninsula College students at Clallam Bay Corrections Center, and Olympic Corrections Center. The Navigator supports students through their entire life cycle as an incarcerated student from orientation and admission through graduation. Using the guided pathways model this position assists students choosing the educational pathway that best suits their academic and career interests, helping students evaluate transitional studies and/or post secondary education or pre-apprenticeship programs both while incarcerated and post release. This position is part of a multidisciplinary team that supports incarcerated individuals develop a comprehensive reentry plan and assist individuals reintegration into the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Develop educational plans with students to be incorporated into the Individual Reentry Plans (IRP) with counselors, DOC reentry navigators, community corrections staff, and multidisciplinary teams in accordance with RCW 72.09.270.
- Identify and engage in outreach to incarcerated individuals and provide education resources as needed focusing on those closest to release.
- Participate in facility orientations
- Provide academic advising to students in transitional studies programs, postsecondary and/or pre-apprenticeship programs available to students during incarceration.
- Provide ongoing career and employment counseling including discussions on employment restrictions post incarceration.
- Assist students applying for post-secondary education and training including: applying for admission; completing and submitting financial aid and scholarship applications, coordinating phone calls or virtual meetings with colleges and/or apprenticeships in the community, assisting incarcerated individuals address prior student loan debt, and establishing repayment plans.
- Explain transitional studies, postsecondary and/or pre-apprenticeship program requirements including access to employment data on specific programs.
- Assist students with acquiring high school and postsecondary transcripts from previous educational programs.
- Provide registered students with copies of unofficial transcripts quarterly.
- Provide training and information to classification staff as needed.
- Advise new/prospective students of requirements for academic transfer and professional/technical programs and/or degrees. Provide community program information to students who are within 24 months of release.
- Coordinate and promote special events, i.e.; graduation, workshops, etc.
- Participate in Board Navigator meetings, the Department Reentry Navigator meetings, and other trainings/meetings as assigned to facilitate sharing information, resources, and best practices to enhance the effectiveness of the navigator program.
- Track and monitor student contacts and progress. Document navigation services, and case notes in Offender Management Network Information (OMNI), including Chronos, and Scorecard. Complete required quarterly and annual reports.
- Perform other duties and special projects as required.

- Design and produce professional documents demonstrating excellent grammar and ability to interpret report data.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and to communicate clearly with native and non-native English speakers.
- Ability to successfully collaborate with faculty, staff, community members and students as part of an effective student development team.
- Evidence of strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving skills; demonstrated ability to take initiative.
- Evidence of working positively and effectively with a diverse population.
- Computer proficiency in Word, Excel and data base systems.
Required education or certificates:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
Required physical abilities:
- Work is typically performed in an office setting in a correctional environment and requires the ability to sit or stand and perform computer data entry for extended periods of time; must be able to operate a computer and a variety of office equipment.
- Ability to lift up to lift up to 30lbs.
Required work schedule and work environment:
- Must be willing to work in a corrections center environment where the potential for violence is a working condition and work in offices without exterior windows.
- Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday; must be able to work flexible hours and have the ability to travel for training and to alternate work sites.

- Annual Salary Range: $50,000.00 - $58,916.00
