The Peninsula Symphony Orchestra is a large community orchestra in its 76th season with a budget of approximately $800,000. It performs 4 pairs of subscription concerts plus several additional concerts, including annual collaborations with the Stanford University Symphonic Chorus, an annual family concert, and a summer outdoor pops concert, as well as extensive educational outreach programs. Symphony programs feature internationally renowned soloists; subscription concerts are performed at San Mateo Performing Arts Center and Heritage Theater in Campbell; other concert pairs take place at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall and other area locations. Position
This position is intended to serve as a 2-4 year apprenticeship for an emerging conductor. There will be a performance review after the first year. Start date, August 1, 2025. Reports to Music Director/Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein.
Duties
- Conduct performances as assigned by Music Director, including planning and conducting the annual Family Concert
- Cover (understudy) most rehearsals and all concerts, being fully prepared to conduct in the event of emergencies
- Lead sectional rehearsals as assigned
- Assist Music Director and Artistic Committee in preparation of season programs, rehearsal schedule, and other administrative and musical responsibilities
- Represent the Symphony to the public
Note: Most rehearsals take place in San Bruno, CA on Tuesday evenings.
Experience
- Extensive background and training in orchestral conducting; experience working with symphony orchestras; excellent musicianship; ability to work well with staff, orchestra, and board; excellent communications skills.
