POSITION: Exceptional (Special) Education Supervisor
Work Schedule: 235 days per school year

Reports To: Director of Exceptional (Special) Education
SUMMARY: The Exceptional (Special) Education Supervisor assists the Director in coordination of the District's exceptional (special) education program to ensure the provision of needed services for students with disabilities. The supervisor also provides individualized education programs to meet the needs of all students with disabilities and ensures compliance with all state, federal and local requirements while providing consultation to staff, students, and parents. It is the direct responsibility of this position to aggressively defend and further the doctrine of least restrictive environment and inclusion for each individual building(s) of supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Observe and adhere to all Board of Education policies and regulations, and all administrative rules and procedures.
- Keep abreast of federal and state laws and regulations governing the education of individuals with disabilities (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act and Indiana Article VII).
- Communicate program initiatives and objectives to the Administration, Staff and Community.
- Ensuring appropriate delivery of both special education instruction and related services as stipulated in IEPs.
- Coordinates special transportation as a related service as stipulated in IEPs.
- Ensuring the services provided are of high quality, provided in the LRE and are aligned with students’ IEPs.
- Assist in the development of appropriate individualized education programs that are compliant with state and federal special education regulations and local standards.
- Provide instructional leadership including curriculum and personnel development utilizing best practices.
- Provide regular consultation to building administrators regarding special education and related regulations.
- Regularly assess assigned certified and non-certified staff performance (through SFS) and recommend/communicate needs of improvement when and where appropriate.
- Provide regular technical assistance to certified and non-certified staff.
- Foster active involvement in at least one special education professional organization. (ICASE, CEC, Case, etc.).
- Carefully monitor expenditures of programs under the direct supervision of the Director and recommend necessary supplies and equipment within the confines of the annual budget.
- Closely adhere to the collective Bargaining Agreements of appropriate work groups.
- Facilitate transition services to the next level.
- Assist the Director of Exceptional Education in the Supervision of staff of the Exceptional Education Division.
- Assist in supervision of Medicaid coordinating with Go Solutions, monitoring monthly provider entries, answering Medicaid related questions from staff, providing updates to staff, and arranging for training of new staff.
- Participate in weekly Ex. Ed. staff meetings, monthly Ex. Ed. Parent Forum meetings, annual regional meetings, regular multidisciplinary (OT, Speech, PT, Psychologist, EA, Division Office Staff and Resource Teacher) meetings. Participate in the interview process for certified and non-certified staff.
- Participate in the annual P-H-M Job Fair.
- Complete regular walkthroughs to assigned buildings and provide the Director of Exceptional Education with strengths and
weaknesses of each school Ex Ed program and services.
- Develop and promote effective personnel and administrative relations.
- Participation in Professional Development opportunities offered by the district as well as coordinate, develop, and assist in implementing Ex. Ed. PD for the district.
- Review and analyze state and district wide assessment data and conduct meetings with each assigned building during the school year.
- Effectively communicate with parents and special education process including a process for referrals, evaluations, annual IEPs/and re-evaluations as well as parental rights granted by Article VII and IDEA.
- Facilitating IEP meetings using a strengths-based and family-centered approach.
- Coordinate with students to ensure all documents are completed in a timely manner (according to state, local, policies and connect with participants prior to meetings as needed.
- Maintain student files (paper and electronic) according to school, State and Federal standards.
- Provide training and technical assistance to teachers, related service providers and support service professionals on all aspects
of case management: use of computer systems for the special education process, writing of goal writing, progress reports,
annual case reviews, and parent communication.
- Ensure IEPs are developmentally appropriate, curriculum/standards-based, strength-based, and relevant to individual
students
- As part of the Ex Ed Administrative Team, the Supervisor will when necessary, will participate in parent conferences,
classroom observations, consultations with local agencies, extended IEP team meetings, follow-up on individual cases,
consult with teachers and other team members assigned to the case.
- Advocate for special education with school leadership.
- Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the District Safety Plan
- Work closely with transportation to solve transportation issues.
- Carry out other assignments/duties as directed by the Director of Exceptional Education.
Qualification Requirements:
- Minimum - Master’s degree in some area of Special Education.
- Minimum - Three to five years teaching or therapist (Speech, OT, PT, Psych.) experience in special education preferred.
- Valid Indiana Teaching, Therapist, Psychologist (OT, PT, SLP, RT, Psych.) Certification.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership and organization skills.
- Preferred - Director of Special Education Certificate

- Develop a positive working relationship with administration, staff, students and parents
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with others
- Understand and adapt to a variety of situations
- Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development by attending meetings, workshops, conferences

- Keep abreast of current trends in the field of special education and translate appropriate research to practical applications in the school.
- Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect District equipment and facilities
- Must understand state and federal regulations serving individuals with disabilities (i.e., Article 7, IDEA, Section
- 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, ADA etc.)
Excellent work habits, attendance record and successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
