Educational Services Personnel Position Description

Position: Teacher Aide-Middle School

Work Schedule: 2 - 8 hours daily, as appropriate

Approximately 182 days per year / 8 paid holidays

Evaluation: after 90-days, thereafter annually

Reports to: Building Administrator

Compensation: According to ESP agreement / Level II position

Summary: To provide instructional support by assisting teachers and administrators in the delivery of quality educational opportunities for students.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementation of planned instructional activities.
  • Supervise designated student activities (i.e. lunchroom, playground, classroom)
  • Assist teacher(s) with clerical duties related to instructional activities.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials as directed by teacher(s).
  • Tutor students individually and/or in small group(s).
  • Provide assistance with ill or injured students.
  • Operate equipment in classroom, workroom, or office.
  • Assist substitute teacher(s) in absence of classroom teacher.
  • Assist teachers and administrators in implementation of school rules and procedures.
  • Attend professional development opportunities as appropriate.
  • Accept additional tasks/duties that contribute to the efficient implementation of the corporation's organizational and educational functions.
  • Act as a liaison between faculty and students. Build and maintain a positive rapport with the school community.
  • Follow other directives from the Building Principal that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Qualification Requirements

  • Sixty credit hours of college or the ability to take and successfully pass the paraprofessional test.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills.
  • General office skills (i.e. typing, filing, operation of duplicating equipment).
  • Entry-level computer skills (i.e. word processing, data entry).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to improve and/or develop job-related skills.
  • Excellent communication skills-oral, written, and interpersonal. Detail oriented.
  • Excellent work habits, attendance record and successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  • Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Sensory Requirements ~ Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. All tasks require oral communications ability.

  • Tasks are regularly performed without potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, odors, humidity, vibrations, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity, but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range.

Mental Effort ~ Normal Concentration/intensity, which includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks.
