The Nurse Scientist oversees research and EBP initiatives at Chester County Hospital (CCH). This includes collaboration with leadership to create a culture of inquiry, guide the translation of ideas formed at the bedside into researchable questions, advance research capacity and translation of evidence into practice, apply rigorous scientific methods, coach and mentor clinicians, and to design and execute studies. A culture of inquiry is one where clinicians consistently seek evidence for questions related to practice, and conduct literature reviews to identify evidence, or conduct research to empirically investigate questions for which little or no evidence exists. The Nurse Scientist contributes to the development of a research agenda and collaborates with the other entities and partners across Penn Medicine and the University of Penn School of Nursing. The Nurse Scientist serves as the co-Chair of the Shared Governance Council, The Research & EBP Council (REC) and Chair of the CCH Scientific Review Committee (CCHSRC). The Nurse Scientist reports to the Director of Nursing Quality/Professional Practice and Magnet Program.

Research Agenda:
- Collaborates with leadership to create and operationalize agenda in alignment with Penn Medicine, CCH, and Nursing Goals/Strategies.
- Builds the scientific foundation for clinical practice at CCH through application of evidence and the design and execution of studies.
- Creates a culture of inquiry around the patient and clinician experience.
- Collaborates with clinicians to create EBP initiatives and research studies from bedside clinical inquiry (incl. literature reviews, evidence tables, ROI determination, implementation strategies).
- Conducts own program of research (internal or external).
- Disseminates research findings through peer reviewed publications and presentations at regional, national, and/or international scientific meetings.
- Ensures an ongoing effort to address DEI in research and practice.
- Collaborates within Penn Medicine as well as with outside partners on multi-site research opportunities.
- Collaborates with statistician partners on analysis of data; leads the effort to disseminate findings both internally and externally.
- Collaborates as needed and appropriate on research studies/processes that apply at CCH.
- Maintains collaborative relationships with researchers and leaders from industry-sponsored or cooperative studies in Oncology, Cardiovascular Health, and Orthopedics.
- Develops innovative programs/strategies to educate, mentor and support clinicians in the application of evidence into practice and the research process from inception through dissemination, including processes related to protection of human subjects (i.e., training, protocol development, IRB submission).
- Mentors and supports efforts of shared governance core councils and unit-based councils with respect to research engagement and utilization.
- Leads efforts and collaborates with others to increase grant submission in support of research initiatives and partnerships.
- Oversees all nursing research activity and allocates resources as necessary.
- Chairs the committee and is responsible for policy changes and implementation.
- Maintains communication with Penn’s IRB.
- Serves as Department Chair Approver and business administrator for all studies submitted to Penn’s IRB and conducted at CCH.
- Maintains oversight of the administrative assistant responsibilities in relation to this committee.
- Research and Evidence Based Practice Council
- Manages REC communication including CCH intranet and Medallion Lobby Monitors
- Administers annual EBP award
- Maintains at least an adjunct faculty appointment at Penn’s School of Nursing.
- Participates as Magnet Writer.
- Other duties as assigned to support the Department of Nursing, CCH, and Penn Medicine.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
- Required Ph.D. Nursing or applicable Field and 5 years Nursing Practice, Education or Research
- Required Master's Degree Nursing (if PHD is not in Nursing)
- Experience initiating and managing interdisciplinary teams, publishing peer reviewed articles and grant writing.
