Summary:
- Responsible for the coordination and continuity in the clinical and administrative care of the bariatric surgery patients. Assists in the program development, managing the accreditation process, ensuring continuous compliance with MBSAQIP Standards, maintaining pathways and protocols, patient education, monitoring outcomes data and collection, quality improvement initiatives, and the education of relevant staff with a focus on metabolic and bariatric patient safety. Supports the development of written protocols and education of nursing staff and other health care team members to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events. Serves as a liaison between the facility and all bariatric surgeons and health care team members who care for bariatric surgery patients and works in conjunction with the UPHS Bariatric Program staff to create consistency across entities for safe practices and protocols for safe outcomes for patients. Works closely with all hospital staff who care for the bariatric patients, including the inpatient clinical dietitians, assuring that care delivered to patients is timely while ensuring best outcomes.Responsible for the nutritional care of bariatric surgery patients. Assesses the nutritional status of patients, develops and recommends nutrition care plans, providing nutrition education and performs ongoing follow up and reassessment of nutrition interventions. Precepts dietetic interns during clinical outpatient rotations.Manages the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Reviewer and Bariatric Surgery Out-patient Dietitian
Responsibilities:

Manages accreditation process to ensure that the program meets expectations established by MBSAQIP Standards and other governing agencies.
Ensures that all policies and procedures that guide and support the bariatric surgery program provide best outcomes and are utilized by staff. Actively participates and is present at every MBSAQIP site survey.
Collaborates with the MBS Director, clinical staff and other physicians in the development of policies and protocols which are evidence based to ensure safe outcomes for patients.
Responsible for the oversight of the data collection process for the MBSAQIP Data Registry ensuring that data input by the MBS Reviewer is timely and accurate.
Serves as the liaison between the facility, bariatric surgeons and staff and the general surgeons providing call coverage.
Implements and maintains effective staff education that adheres to best practice guidelines and performance outcomes. Ensures an ongoing education program for the bariatric surgery team and all relevant staff is established and maintained to ensure a basic understanding of metabolic and bariatric surgeries performed at the center, including the risks and benefits for all procedures, signs and symptoms of postoperative complications, safe patient transfer and mobilization and sensitivity training to prevent weight bias
In collaboration with the MBS Director submits timely and complete Annual Compliance Reports
Provides oversight for the bariatric surgery support groups ensuring that a licensed health care supervises the sessions and topics discussed are relevant for this population.
Collaborates with the MBS Director and all team members in quality improvement initiatives to ensure safe, efficacious and high-quality care is provided to each patient at all times.
Ensures that the facility, equipment, and furniture accommodate all prospective metabolic and bariatric patients who are within the weight limits established by the MBS Committee.
Credentials:
- Licensed Dietitian (LD); Registered Dietitian (RD) required.
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Bachelors degree in Nutrition and 3 years Clinical experience and experience developing, planning and implementing programs required.
- Masters degree preferred.
