Student Consultants work 3-4 hours a week in a paid role analyzing, affirming, and, as appropriate, supporting the revision of classroom practice in one of the faculty partner's courses, with the goal of maximizing engagement and learning for all involved. Student and faculty partnerships take a range of approaches to their collaboration, starting with a focus on classroom practice and often expanding to consider curriculum, assessment, and other dimensions of pedagogy. Student Consultants attend their faculty partner's class once each week, taking detailed observation notes focused on pedagogical issues he or she identifies. The Student Consultant then types up their observation notes and delivers these in a weekly meeting with their faculty partner. Student Consultants also participate in a weekly, semi-structured, one-hour discussion with other Student Consultants.Qualifications and Requirements : To be a Student Consultant you must : Be an incoming sophomore, junior, or senior in the Agribusiness Management major; the Agricultural and Extension Education major; the Agricultural Science major; or the Community, Environment, and Development major Have a strong interest in the process of teaching and learning, and particularly what occurs within a classroom Be willing to commit to and follow through on the responsibilities inherent in the role, communicate with honesty and courtesy, reflect on this work using the means provided, uphold the privacy of your partner, and keep strictly confidential what is discussed between you and your partners and at meetingResponsibilities : Visit your faculty partner's class once each week and take detailed observation notes focused on pedagogical issues he or she identifies as of interest Type up your observation notes each week and deliver those to your faculty partner in a timely manner Meet weekly with your faculty partner Attend and participate in weekly, semi-structured, one-hour discussions with other Student Consultants focused on what is happening in your faculty partner's classrooms and how to support faculty exploration, affirmation, and revision of pedagogical practices Offer mid-semester and end-of-semester feedback about the Student Consultant ProgramApplication Process : Contact the Associate Department Head, AESE, Tim Kelsey (tkelsey@psu.edu) to express your interest and request a copy of the Guidelines for Student Consultants.
