What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tool and Die Maker position at Pennant Moldings, Inc.?

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Uses tools and dies to build fixtures; creates dies as required to construct new fixtures.
  • Repairs dies, molds, and tools when needed; disassembles molds, jigs, tools, and fixtures, then reassembles when repaired.
  • Reads and understands blueprints and complicated schematics as required to create and build new fixtures, tools, and machine parts.
  • Inspects completed tools and dies for signs of imperfection or damage that may affect functionality.
  • Regularly tests all equipment, tools, and machines to ensure they are arranged and set properly and working efficiently.
  • Modifies machines to control speed, material feed, or path of cut as required to ensure a quality product is produced within specifications.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized workspace.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to safely and accurately operate all measuring and production equipment.
  • Working understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.
  • Thorough understanding of metallic properties.
  • Ability to work independently, and with engineers and machinists.
  • Proficient with computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of an apprentice program with a licensed professional or established company required.
  • Tool and diemaker certification required.

Summary

Ability to work any shift.

Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.

Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.

Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.

Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.

Lifts machined parts and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable.

Smooths flat and contoured surfaces and power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms.

Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.

Connects wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components.

Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.

Responsible for daily maintenance, upkeep, and repair for all dies on the plant floor

Repair cleaning and troubleshooting of tools and dies

Coordinates response of all tooling issues with production department

Makes arrangements with necessary tool shops in regard to repairs and preventative maintenance that cannot be done in house

Requires quick and decisive action when work cannot be performed in house

Inspects finished dies for smoothness, contour deformity, and defects

File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together

With proper approval, fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gages, and tools using machine tools and hand tools

Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure the parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary

Assist with maintenance and repair of machines or equipment that are broken or in need of troubleshooting

Responsible for ordering material, keeping correct inventory and parts need for tool repair and maintenance

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in Tool & Die and five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Tool and Die Technician

Experience with mills, laths, die grinder, service grinder, and other tool and die equipment

Experienced at working with large dies including single, double stage, and progressive dies

Familiar with automated tooling and repairing hardened steal dies

Experience with CNC machine operations and modifications preferred

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and depth perception.
