What are the responsibilities and job description for the Booking Technician position at Pennington County?
The Booking Technician serves a dual function for the Pennington County Jail. They are tasked with controlling facility movement in the control room and processing inmates in and out of the facility. This is a complex role requiring a high level of accuracy and security compliance.
The Booking Technician is responsible for booking inmates in and out, maintaining inmate accounts and assisting booking staff as needed. This process requires close and courteous interaction with inmates, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
When assigned, the Booking Technician operates the control room, the hub of all communication and movement within the Jail. The Booking Technician serves a vital role in maintaining a facility that is safe and running smoothly. • Provide exceptional customer service to inmates, visitors, professional and public service partners.
• Control movement within the secure side of the facility, to include inmates, visitors and staff.
• Serve as the last line of defense in the secure control room during major incidents.
• Monitor security cameras for officer and inmate safety.
• Enter and release inmate property.
• Manage inmate money accounts, to include deposits and withdrawals, and enter, collect and manage inmate bond and fee payments.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for public and professional inquires, requests for inmate information to the clerk of courts, attorneys, probation, patrol and other public service partners.
• Verify intake and release information, to include identification, charges and hold details.
• Maintain compliance with all county policies and procedures.

Working Environment:
• Work is typically performed in an office in a correctional facility.
• Work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
• This position includes close contact with inmates.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
• Must be able to move up to 20 pounds unassisted and move 40 pounds with assistance.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively on telephone, in-person and in writing.
• When assigned to the control room, must be able to work in a confined environment while seated in front of multiple monitors for the duration of an 8- to 12-hour shift.
• Ability to enter data and operate a phone and two-way radio.
• While at the booking counter, must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time while entering data, type and inventory an inmate’s property.
• Ability to hear, bend, stoop and lift.Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Preference given to candidates with above average computer skills, cash handling experience and a minimum of one year customer service employment.
License / Certification: SD Driver's License (within 90 days of moving to SD)Benefits Include:
