Overview

The Peer Mentor plays a vital role in providing guidance, support, and mentorship to fellow Penn College students. As a trusted resource, the Peer Mentor will assist and empower students by offering academic assistance, sharing personal experiences, and facilitating discussions. They will help individuals enhance skills, broaden their perspective, navigate challenges, set goals, and develop effective study strategies. The Peer Mentor responsibilities will involve building relationships, providing resources, and fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for students. Other duties could also include but not be limited to conducting outreach and performing other activities aimed at developing and enhancing the peer mentoring program.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of one semester at Penn College and be currently enrolled.
  • Must have a current GPA of 2.5 or higher. Required

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, or leadership roles is desirable, but not mandatory. Training will be provided. Required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with students. Required
  • Empathy and the ability to provide nonjudgmental support to students from diverse backgrounds. Required
  • Knowledge of campus resources, academic policies, and student support services. Required
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively. Required
  • Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Required

 

Responsibilities

  • Mentorship and Support: • Attend peer mentor weekly meetings and training sessions. • Provide individual and group mentoring sessions to assigned students, offering academic, personal, and social guidance. • Assist students in setting and achieving realistic goals, creating action plans, and overcoming challenges. • Foster a supportive and inclusive environment by actively listening to students, providing empathy, and promoting student wellbeing. • Share personal experiences, strategies, and resources to enhance student success and engagement. • Support the Center for Academic Excellence and its initiatives as needed.
  • Academic and Personal Assistance: • Help students develop effective study habits, time management skills, and organizational strategies. • Provide guidance on navigating academic requirements and personal journeys. • Assist students in understanding and utilizing campus resources, such as libraries, tutoring centers, academic support services, counseling and health services, student advocacy, Veteran/ Military Services, etc. • Facilitate study groups, workshops, and study skills sessions to enhance student learning, self-development, and academic performance as well as meet one on one with students when appropriate.
  • Campus Engagement and Outreach: • Support events, workshops, and seminars to enhance student engagement and learning opportunities. • Serve as a role model and advocate for student success, actively promoting a culture of academic excellence and personal growth.
  • Documentation and Reporting: • Maintain accurate and confidential records of mentorship sessions and student progress. • Generate reports and evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the peer mentoring program. • Collaborate with program coordinators and administrators to provide feedback and suggest improvements. • Adhere to confidentiality and college standards on handling sensitive and personal information and data whether that is paper or electronic document management.
  • Physical Standards and Special Job Features

    May require some lifting of program materials. Ability to move freely about campus.

    Hourly rate is $10.00.
