This role provides technical support for database environments Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL and supports the full system life cycle. This position is part of a team of Database Administrators supporting multiple database technologies.
Required Skills
Database Design and Architecture
- Design, develop, and implement databases to meet business requirements.
- Create and maintain database models, entity relationship diagrams, and data dictionaries.
- Ensure data integrity, consistency, and security.
- Strong understanding of scalability and maintainability best practices, and their importance to database design.
Database Administration
Install, configure, and maintain database systems.Perform database backups, restores, and recovery activities.Monitor database performance and availability.Plan, coordinate, and execute database upgrades migrations, and patching.Support data export, load, and transformations (ETL).Develop monitoring, reporting, and alerting processes.Troubleshoot database issues, including performance problems, data corruption, and connectivity issues.Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of database designs, configurations, and operating procedures.Provide technical support to development, IT staff, and end users.Develop and generate reports on database performance, security, and compliance.Security
Implement and manage database security measures, including access control, authentication, authorization, and encryption.Provide database server vulnerability remediation.Familiarity with external and local account / role management.Ensure compliance with organizational security policies and industry best practices.Performance tuning and optimization
Identify and resolve performance issues by monitoring database performance metrics and analyzing query performance.Optimize queries and indexes, tuning memory settings, and identify and address performance bottlenecks.OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Responsible for documentation, tracking, controlling, & prioritizing open projects.Comply with the Agency’s enterprise security and privacy policies and departmental procedures.Research, test and install new database related software.Perform scheduled maintenance.Other duties as assigned.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related degree and two to five years of experience or the equivalent combination of training, experience, and / or certification(s).Ability to create process automations, e.g., automated backups, proactive monitoring and alerting using tools such as : UNIX / Linux shell scripts, Windows Powershell, Python, Ansible, and / or StoneBranch Workload Automation.Familiarity with Linux, Windows Server, and AIX Operating Systems.Familiarity with Jira or other issue and project tracking tools.Use of ITSM Service Management tooling, including Incident, Problem, Change management.Understanding or demonstrated use of Public Cloud deployment and operation stacks.Familiarity with enterprise / system monitoring tools.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires participation in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation. The frequency of the rotation depends on the number of members in the team. On-call requires carrying a cell-phone and responding to calls within the agreed upon timeframe set within PHEAA’s standards. Internet connectivity from home is required as part of the on-call rotation.This position will support a federal government contract. Applicants must be able to obtain Public Trust security clearance as required of federal government contractors to include a background check conducted by the U.S. Government to determine eligibility and suitability for federal contract employment for public trust or sensitive positions. For this level of clearance, the federal government requires applicants to possess U.S. citizenship. In light of this federal government requirement, PHEAA will be unable to hire applicants without United States citizenship for such positions.
