Research Analyst - Legislative & Policy Research Office

Provide research and composition support for issue-specific research assignments, including the preparation of written correspondence, reports and memoranda, legislation and other legislative-related documents.


This application will require a cover letter, resume, and a college transcript.  In addition, please write a brief essay, a minimum of 250 words but no more than 500 words, on the policy topic of your choice such as re-districting, prescription drug costs, criminal justice reform, etc. and use sources as needed.  Any application that does not include all four of these requirements will not be considered.

  • Prepare written correspondence to constituents, legislative offices, and executive-branch agencies regarding local, state and federal issues on behalf of Members and staff 
  • Conduct legislative research and analysis necessary to compile and compose written memoranda on local, state and federal issues 
  • Conduct legal research of existing statutes, regulations and case law 
  • Analyze and understand the local, state and national implications of proposed legislation
  • Analyze information obtained from diverse source material to conceptualize and define problems, and collaborate with Members and staff to identify and clarify objectives and provide recommendations 
  • Work with LPRO management, Committees and Legislative Reference Bureau staff attorneys to develop and draft legislation, resolutions and amendments for Members and staff 
  • Prepare additional legislative-related materials including bill summaries and co-sponsorship memoranda 
  • Communicate progress and status of assigned work requests to LPRO Unit Manager and use Microsoft SharePoint project management system to record updates on all pending assignments 
  • Track legislation and monitor floor activity 
  • Attend LPRO meetings, Committee meetings and public hearings as assigned

  • Requires onsite support of team members, staff, and Members, especially during Session. Session essential employees must be physically present at the worksite on Session Days.

 

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in a related field or discipline.  
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the legislative process 
  • Ability to conduct policy research and legislative analysis, interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures, and understand and use narrative material 
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar 
  • Ability to complete tasks in Microsoft Office Suite and Legislative Data Processing Center (LDPC) applications 
  • Demonstrate integrity and good judgment and model strong ethics in all actions
  • Committed to embedding ethics and legal compliance into all aspects of the Caucus

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.  The employee is exposed to the moving of mechanical parts of office equipment.  Working longer than a normal working day may be required.
