The First Vice President (FVP) of Database Engineering will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of our critical database systems. This role will lead a team of database engineers, ensuring the availability, performance, security, and scalability of our data infrastructure. The FVP will partner with cross-functional teams, including product, engineering, and analytics, to deliver data-driven solutions that support the company's growth and strategic objectives in a complex, regulated mortgage environment.
The FVP of Database Engineering will:
- Lead and mentor multiple teams of Database Engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
- Develop and implement a comprehensive database strategy aligned with Pennymac's business objectives
- Manage relationships with infrastructure, security, compliance, audit, development, and business leadership
- Drive the adoption of AWS native patterns for database solutions
- Lead efforts in database modernization and migration to cloud-based patterns and platforms
- Perform active capacity planning and performance tuning to ensure optimal database performance
- Establish and enforce database engineering best practices, standards, and policies
- Provide guidance to subordinates in maximizing database performance
- Architect and manage scalable and highly available database solutions across Microsoft SQL, Postgres, AWS RDS, AWS Aurora, and DynamoDB environments
- Drive the adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation
- Implement and manage Schema as Code using Liquibase
- Design and implement robust CI/CD pipelines for database deployments and schema migrations
- Optimize database performance and ensure high availability through proactive monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning
- Ensure data security and compliance with industry regulations and internal policies
- Troubleshoot difficult database problems
- Develop and implement data archival and retention strategies
- Provide 24/7 support for critical database systems as needed

Demonstrate behaviors aligned with the organization’s desired culture and values
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- 10 years expert level designing, developing, streamlining CI/CD principles and best practices for database deployments.
- Proven experience in leading and managing database engineering teams.
- Strong knowledge of database performance monitoring and optimization tools.
- Deep expertise in relational databases, specifically Microsoft SQL Server and Postgres, including advanced performance tuning, high availability, and security.
- Strong experience with AWS RDS, AWS Aurora, and DynamoDB, including cloud-native architecture patterns.
- Extensive experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Proficiency in Schema as Code using Liquibase for database schema management.
- Experience with database automation and scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
- Strong understanding of modern database architecture.
- Experience with database migrations.
- Experience with Data Warehousing and Data Lake concepts.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven track record at delivering timely and accurate information in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with database capacity planning.
- Experience with financial services or the mortgage industry preferred.
- Experience with database security best practices and compliance requirements.
- Experience with SOX audit requirements.
