Job Overview

Summary / Objective

The General Manager assumes responsibility, and is accountable, for customer retention and the profitability of each department in the dealership on behalf of the company. The General Manager fulfills this responsibility through the use of sound business management practices. The General Manager plans, motivates, and coordinates the activities of the management team.

Essential Functions

  • Directs and monitors all dealership management or supervisory personnel functions and completes formal performance evaluations of all department managers at regularly scheduled intervals
  • Plans dealership operations for the year and submits to the area and corporate management for approval
  • Meets with the Controller / Office Manager weekly to review departmental forecasts with the annual forecast
  • Meets with managers individually to develop goals and objectives and to review performance
  • Monitors the daily operating control (DOC), recommending improved courses of action where necessary
  • Communicates management policies and procedures to all employees and ensures that they are followed
  • Provides the Corporation with accurate weekly reports on the financial condition of the dealership
  • Ensures that the monthly financial statement is complete, accurate, and submitted on time to the factory
  • Coordinates with the business office to ensure that records and analyses are maintained accurately
  • Develops and maintains a good working relationship with lending institutions and manufacturer personnel
  • Holds regularly scheduled meetings to ensure that every department is operating efficiently and profitably
  • Hires, trains, and motivates all dealership department managers
  • Provides enthusiastic leadership to help shape employees' attitudes and build morale
  • Reviews and approves compensation plans for all employees
  • Develops merchandising strategies and assists in creating effective, cost-efficient advertising programs
  • Resolves any customer complaints that department managers are unable to rectify
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from outside agencies
  • Reviews all requests for training, approves those that are appropriate and consistent with the dealership's goals for professional / technical ability and advancement, and monitors their effectiveness
  • Works with the Dealer Principal to make proposals or changes to the operating plan and associated budgets
  • Makes sure that departments hold to budgeted revenue and expense objectives
  • Authorizes all major departmental expenditures
  • Maintain records, and controls, and requests reports from others within the dealership to assess dealership performance
  • Creates and facilitates the operating procedures and policies for the dealership
  • Balances the expectations and demands of customers, employees, suppliers, owners, and community
  • Offers coordination and focus for all areas of dealership operation
  • Handles customer complaints sensibly while showing empathy and a constructive attitude
  • Addresses customers in a friendly and courteous manner
  • Follows all attendance and punctuality standards with adherence to timekeeping standards including recording time of arrival, departure, and all breaks for self and subordinates
  • Follows lawful directions from supervisors
  • Upholds the company's non-disclosure and confidentiality policies and agreements
  • Attends company meetings as required
  • Works evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Maintains a professional appearance and work area in accordance with company policy
  • Leads and manages others in an exemplary and professional manner

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Ability to understand and follow work rules and procedures
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
  • Ability to interact well with others and be a positive influence on morale of department, dealership, and organization

    This position requires the ability to push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, reach, grasp, and walk on a regular basis.

    This position involves repetitive motion.

    Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

    Works evening, weekend, and holiday work hours as required.

    Required Education and Experience

    Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent in business; and at least two years related experience and / or training in a dealership sales environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years in a supervisory role in prior employment.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    Bachelor's degree (B.S or B.A) or equivalent; and two to four years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience in retail automotive sales is highly desired.
