The position of a Peer Recovery Supporter is responsible for providing direct Peer Recovery Support services to clients, under direction from Peer Support Supervisor, and in accordance with State, Federal, and accreditation requirements for Medicaid using Person-Centered modalities. To perform this job successfully, the incumbents will utilize the training and skills learned through their certified instruction from the State of Ohio to perform each duty proficiently. Some requirements may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health or safety of themselves or others.

The requirements listed in this document are the minimum levels of knowledge, skills, or abilities. Peers engage in direct work with clients and in indirect work that supports their work with clients. The main types of direct work are advocacy, connecting to resources, experiential sharing, building community, relationship building, group facilitation, skill building/mentoring/goal setting, and socialization/self-esteem building. The main types of indirect work are group planning and development, administration, team communication, supervision/training, receiving support, education/awareness building, and information gathering and verification. In addition, peers also do work aimed at building relationships with staff and work aimed at legitimizing the peer role. Experience, approach, presence, role modeling, collaboration, challenge, and compromise can be seen as the tangible enactments of peers’ philosophy of work.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients/patients in overcoming barriers to treatment and meeting basic needs to promote self-sufficiency.
  • Assist clients/patients with building social skills that will empower and enhance integration opportunities and teach self-advocacy skills that support success within the community.
  • Provide education to clients/patients on how to identify and work through negative self talk and ways to overcome fears.
  • Provide education to clients/patients around wellness management and recovery skills.
  • Educate clients/patients around community and natural supports, and how to utilize these in the recovery process.
  • Provide goal-planning sessions, access to resources, care navigation, and one-to-one support to clients/patients and their families where appropriate.
  • Listen attentively with respect, acceptance, and encouragement.
  • Ensure and uphold the confidentiality requirements of all client/patient information and manage all daily tasks and activities consistent with HIPAA, the 42 CFR part 2, and state and federal laws and regulations regarding confidentiality and security.
  • Lend unique insight into substance use disorders and what makes recovery possible.
  • Work cooperatively and respectfully with all teammates, clients/patients, visitors, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed as related to client/patient support.
  • Responsible for getting case notes done within 48 hours of service.

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Knowledge acquired through the Ohio state certification process and continuing education to maintain certification.
  • Lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use disorder.
  • Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes.
  • Ability to communicate with all departments.
  • Knowledge and skills to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support individuals in self-directed recovery.
  • Ability to assist individuals in addressing symptoms using strategies such as positive self-talk.
  • Knowledge and skills sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other individuals with severe mental illness.
  • Knowledge of how to establish and sustain self-help (mutual support) and educational groups by soliciting input from individuals on their strengths and interests.
  • A valid driver's license is required as some driving and/or transportation may be required to take clients to medical appointments, job sites, social activities, and other community resources.
