The Business Development Officer / Portfolio Manager is primarily responsible for developing new business through the acquisition of loans and deposits, while also cross-selling a full range of bank products and services. This individual excels at building rapport with prospects and existing clients, developing strong, trust-based relationships, and delivering exceptional customer service. Success in this role requires outstanding prospecting, communication, and closing skills, along with the ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment.
Additionally, this role supports the commercial lending team by contributing to the underwriting, monitoring, and ongoing management of credit quality within the loan portfolio. This may include collaborating on the origination and servicing of loans, participating in the loan closing process, and providing in-depth analysis and recommendations on commercial loan requests. While the primary focus is on generating new business, the role may also include management of a modest individual loan portfolio.

Requirements
Business Development (Primary Focus – 2/3 of Role):
- Provides exceptional personal service to internal and external clients by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, accountability, and respect in all interactions.
- Develops and executes effective calling, prospecting, and relationship strategies to deepen existing customer relationships and generate new business across loans, deposits, and other bank products and services.
- Coordinates and follows up on client appointments with calling officers, including thank-you communications and ongoing relationship management.
- Partners with Business Relationship Officers, Personal Bankers, and Loan Officers as applicable to initiate and support the processing of business development-related transactions.
- Aligns customer needs with appropriate banking solutions, including deposit, cash management, merchant bankcard, and lending services.
- Resolves customer concerns and collaborates with departments and branches to ensure a seamless client experience.
- Supports marketing initiatives, may coordinates Small Business Round Table or similar events, and represents the bank at community, civic, and trade activities.
- Maintains strong knowledge of bank products, services, and lending solutions to effectively support customer needs.
- Prepares reports, correspondence, and documentation related to business development efforts.
- Performs special projects or other duties as assigned by senior management.
Portfolio Management (Secondary Focus – 1/3 of Role):
- Supports the commercial lending team by assisting in underwriting, monitoring, and maintaining the credit quality of assigned loan portfolios, including a modest to moderate portfolio of direct client relationships.
- Participates in the origination, servicing, and closing of new and renewed commercial loans either independently or in partnership with Loan Officers and credit staff.
- Conducts in-depth financial analyses and risk assessments to support sound lending decisions and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and bank credit policies.
- Collaborates with operational teams to ensure accurate documentation, timely processing, and effective client follow-through.
- Completes required compliance and sales training within established timeframes; adheres to all bank policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Provides annual business development training to calling officers and manages assigned projects aligned with the Bank’s strategic goals.

- Demonstrates a working knowledge of credit underwriting principles and collaborates with credit partners to structure sound loan requests.
Education, training and experience:
- College degree in accounting, finance or business management or related field preferred; or commensurate experience.
- Requires a minimum of 3 years experience in the financial industry with demonstrated aptitude for outside business development.
- 2-5 years of experience in combined credit analysis, loan assistant, and/or portfolio management. Handles transactions and relationships with limited to moderate oversight from assigned officers.
