About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Safety Officer to join our client's team in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a Safety Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment within the petroleum products supply chain. This position requires proactive monitoring, training, and enforcement of safety protocols in accordance with OSHA standards, Puerto Rico labor laws, and EEOC practices. You will conduct risk assessments, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster a culture of health and safety across all operational areas.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, protocols, and procedures that align with Puerto Rico labor laws and OSHA regulations.
Conduct routine safety audits, site inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA and Puerto Rico labor laws. Compliance will be monitored through regular internal audits, inspection reports, and adherence to corrective action plans as necessary.
Lead safety training programs and maintain accurate records of employee certifications and participation.
Respond to safety incidents, investigate causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
Prepare and present regular safety reports to management, highlighting areas of concern and suggested improvements.
Oversee the use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety-related materials.
Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections or audits.
Ensure the effective communication of safety protocols to employees, contractors, and visitors.
Support emergency response plans and participate in emergency drills and procedures.
Required Experience & Qualifications
3-5 years of experience as a Safety Officer, preferably in the petroleum, energy, or industrial sectors. Equivalent education or relevant experience may also be considered.
Experience in conducting safety training and risk assessments.
Knowledge of OSHA, Puerto Rico labor laws, and federal compliance regulations. Additional certifications or training specific to Puerto Rico, such as training on Act 17-1988 (Puerto Rico’s Anti-Discrimination Law), may be required.
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification (required).
CPR and First Aid Certification (preferred).
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification (preferred). Equivalent certifications or relevant experience may also be considered.
Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage employees at all levels.
Ability to develop and deliver effective training materials and presentations.
Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and incident reporting software. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities, as required by Puerto Rico labor laws and the ADA.
Attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environments.
Physical Capabilities
Ability to stand, walk, and inspect job sites for extended periods.
Capacity to lift up to 50 pounds and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Flexibility to work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and confined spaces. As required by Puerto Rico labor laws and the ADA, reasonable accommodations will be provided.
