Scope of Position
Reporting directly to the Founder and CEO, the Controller oversees the preparation and reporting of all financial statements and develops accounting processes to improve financial accuracy, efficiency, and controls. This is a new role, and the Controller will be a critical resource for developing the financial procedures that will support the rapid expansion of the business. The Controller will also be a strong business partner to all departmental teams, from sales to operations.
Responsibilities
GENERAL
Oversee monthly accounting functions, develop processes to ensure compliance with appropriate U.S. GAAP standards, and be a relationship manager with external auditors.
Develop and maintain the Chart of Accounts, Monthly Close Checklist, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for accounting activities, resulting in shorter monthly close and consistent accounting treatment.
Develop insightful reporting on financial metrics and communicate performance to business partners to drive profitable growth and improved business decision-making.
Establish vital financial processes to support ERP-like behavior and be a key influencer in implementing an ERP system. Examples include Product Master Data Management, a standardized Customer set-up procedure, and Inventory Valuation SOP.
Develop and maintain a fixed asset registry; implement a process to ensure Capital Expenditure is appropriately tracked and recorded.
Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard financial accuracy and protect company assets.
Support tax planning and compliance.
Oversee credit compliance and reporting while coordinating cash needs.
Be a trusted financial resource for operational and commercial teams; Build financial literacy throughout the organization.
Perform other accounting duties as assigned and required by management.
COST ACCOUNTING
Estimate new and proposed product costs.
Set up Bill of Materials and Master Recipes of new products.
Collect and analyze data about a companys operational cost.
Analyze the manufacturing variance by line of material / material group monthly.
Analyze manufacturing costs and prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
Analyze labor, overhead, and depreciation and compare standard costs to actual expenses.
Evaluate and perform monthly price variance.
Close month-end activity for production and maintenance.
Recommend changes to the companys processes and policies to reduce cost and maximize profit.
GENERAL LEDGER
Perform all aspects of the month-end close process and Journal Entries.
Analyze inventory performance and communicate with the sales team to take proper action with inventory aging.
Conduct physical inventories and monitor the cycle count program quarterly and annually.
Manage prepaid accounts and book journal entries for amortization.
Manage the accrual of Rebates, Brokerages, and Discounts.
Manage AUC, Fixed Assets, and Depreciation.
Lead the annual physical fixed asset audit.
Analyze Profit & Loss accounts, IS Flux, and book the adjustment entries to accrue the expense to satisfy GAAP matching principles.
Investigate and resolve audit findings, account discrepancies, and issues of non-compliances.
Perform account reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts.
Coordinate accounting functions and programs
Development of new accounting systems, programs, and procedures.
Manage sales & use tax and provide support for the filing of federal, local, and special tax returns.
Assist in special projects as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field or demonstrated Controller expertise through previous work experience.
7 years of work experience with a food manufacturing environment preferred.
CPA is highly preferred for ERP implementation or development
Experience with QuickBooks is a benefit but not required.
