Scope of Position
The Senior Chemist will oversee and manage the analytical laboratory operations at our facility, serving as the subject matter expert in chemistry and advanced analytical techniques. This role ensures the reliability and availability of quality laboratory instrumentation during production hours and maintains audit readiness of the laboratories. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth technical expertise in analytical chemistry, a strong commitment to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and demonstrated leadership abilities. A continuous improvement mindset, self-initiative, and the ability to influence and train others are critical for success in this position.
Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations and Compliance
- Enforce Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Validate and verify analytical methods, ensuring the use of official and approved techniques.
- Train and qualify personnel performing laboratory tests.
- Ensure availability of reagents, reference materials, and up-to-date SOPs for the laboratory.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring service contracts and schedules are documented and accessible.
- Implement robust documentation practices for all laboratory activities.
Data Management and Quality Oversight
- Track, report, and review analytical lab results for accuracy and trends.
- Lead initiatives to improve out-of-specification results by conducting effective root cause analyses and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Manage IQ OQ PQ processes for all instruments to ensure ongoing qualification and performance.
Continuous Improvement and Troubleshooting
- Assign and monitor proficiency testing, communicate results to relevant stakeholders, and develop improvement plans as necessary.
- Troubleshoot laboratory equipment and develop documentation to streamline processes and train staff.
- Enhance analytical methods to improve accuracy, precision, and cost efficiency.
Method Development and Technical Expertise
- Develop and optimize analytical methods, addressing limitations and improving performance.
- Stay updated on industry advancements, participating in trade shows and organizations to monitor emerging technologies.
- Support the development of Analytical Job Aids and amend them as needed.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Food Science, or a related field required; Masters degree preferred.
Experience:
- 35 years of experience in analytical chemistry within the food or oil industry.
- Hands-on experience with Gas Chromatography (GC), Atomic Absorption Unit, and ICP-OES Spectroscopy.
- Proficiency in wet chemistry methods; experience in oil chemistry is a plus.
- Experience in method development and improvement.
Skills and Competencies:

- Analytical problem-solving skills and sound decision-making abilities.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to train and influence team members across various experience levels.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
