What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Golf Course Maintenance position at Peoria Park District?
Duties: Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Parks & Environmental Services, the Director of Golf Course Maintenance is responsible for:
- Maintenance operations at District golf courses and Golf Learning Center in a safe, efficient manner that enhances the game of golf and is consistent with current accepted practices in the industry.
- Maintenance and facility safety inspections of all buildings and grounds, and daily preventive maintenance and inspections of all machinery and equipment assigned to golf maintenance operations.
- Report and correct all hazards and undesirable conditions immediately.
- Plans, coordinates, and supervises all phases of golf course maintenance and agronomic operations at District golf courses and Golf Learning Center.
- Attend and contribute to Park District Board meetings and committee meetings as required. Generating reports, articles, and advertisements and doing television and radio spots for information and marketing purposes as necessary and assigned.
- Directs and supervises workers assigned to golf maintenance, including hiring, training, daily supervision, progressive discipline processes, and completion of annual performance reviews. Keeps time records and makes necessary reports for payroll.
- Requisition supplies and equipment required for operation and maintenance of District golf courses, Golf Learning Center, and golf facilities.
- Preparing and managing annual budgets for assigned facilities. Responsible for cost control and keeps an accurate accounting of all expenditures, within assigned facility budgets.
- Assist Planning Division staff with the annual preparation of the capital improvement budget for District golf courses.
- Makes appropriate recommendations concerning future projects, equipment, maintenance, and operation of their assigned facilities.
- Follows all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Supports all aspects of the Park District's safety program.

Essential Functions:
- Ability to reach, walk, putt, squat, and bend at the waist and knees.
- Ability to operate power machinery relative to job duties.
- Ability to apply pesticides safely.
- Ability to understand and complete record keeping and paperwork relative to job duties.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Education: Requires a minimum of a two-year degree from an accredited college, junior college, or university in agronomy, turf management, horticulture, or related field and/or at least three years experience as a Class "A" GCSAA Superintendent.
Experience: Requires a minimum of three years in golf course operation and fine turfgrass maintenance.
Certification: Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Illinois Pesticide Applicator's certificate.
Knowledge and Ability:
- Thorough knowledge of golf course operation, including management and maintenance.
- Basic understanding of Park District philosophy, conduct ordinances, and maintenance standards with the ability to interpret knowledge in practical situations.
- Understanding of basic turfgrass management techniques and the biological foundations of turfgrass.
- A good knowledge of plant material, soil characteristics, and their requirements, and of preventive maintenance procedures for golf course and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Requires working knowledge of fertilizers, pesticides, and pesticide application techniques.
- Must possess and maintain a current Illinois State Drivers License.
- Requires knowledge of the game of golf.
- Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
- Ability to communicate effectively (i.e., oral, written, and electronic communications).
- Ability to work holidays, evenings, and weekends as required.
- Demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness, and the ability to deal effectively with others.
