What are the responsibilities and job description for the Education Assistant Zoo position at Peoria Park District?
Duties: Under the supervision of the Zoo Educator, the Education Assistant will be responsible for:
- Developing and providing engaging and interactive conservation education through Peoria Zoos programming: Zoo Camp, Edzoocational Classes, Tours, Interpretation Stations, Birthday Parties, Zoomobiles, Critter Chats, etc.
- Adhering to Peoria Zoo animal handling protocols.
- Assisting in the planning and implementation of Conservation Day events and Peoria Zoo special events.
- Assisting in the training and supervision of the Peoria Zoo Adult and Zoo Teen Volunteers.
- Assisting in the development of conservation graphics and interactives.
- Assisting in producing educational printed materials such as, brochures, self-guided tours, and materials for educators.
- Wearing proper designated uniform during regular zoo hours.
- Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Supporting all aspects of the Park Districts safety program.
- Performing all other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to communicate with customers and staff.
Education: Two years of college with a background in education or life sciences preferred.
Experience: Experience working with the public. Public speaking experience is required.
Knowledge and Ability:
- Must be dependable, courteous, and able to work with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to develop and provide enthusiastic, engaging, and educational programming with groups of all sizes.
- Must be able to work harmoniously with the public, fellow employees, and volunteers in a cooperative manner.
- Ability to effectively communicate in a timely manner both verbally and in writing.
- Must have a working knowledge of the animal kingdom and natural history.
- Ability to handle, assist in training, and provide proper care for live animals used in Peoria Zoo educational programming.
- Must be able to adhere to all Peoria Park District and Peoria Zoo protocols.
- Ability to provide the best possible image of the Peoria Park District and Peoria Zoo.
- Must have a valid drivers license.
