Description
Duties: Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Park Maintenance, the Detweiller Park Manager will be responsible for:
- Maintenance and general appearance of Detweiller Park, including building, facilities, and grounds.
- Keep grass mowed, shrubs trimmed, and general care of all plants in the park.
- Perform and instruct preventative maintenance on all equipment.
- Schedule maintenance work and procedures and keep time records as directed.
- Safety aspects of the buildings and grounds including all walkways, roads, playground equipment, picnic equipment, and other facilities. Make regular inspections of all areas. Report and correct all hazards and undesirable conditions immediately.
- Supervise full and part-time workers; court workers; volunteers; and urban league workers assigned to the maintenance operations of the park.
- The requisition of supplies and equipment required for general maintenance work in the park.
- Make arrangements as required for groups and activities scheduled in the park.
- Maintain and prepare athletic fields as required.
- Prepare an annual budget. Keep an accurate accounting of all expenditures within the park budget.
- Keep the grounds free of all debris, check for vandalism, and make immediate reports.
- Perform controlled burns.
- Must wear a clean designated Park District uniform daily while on the job.
- Follow all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Support all aspects of the park district safety program.
- Perform other duties as assigned:
- which are reasonably related to the duties described; or
- which need to be performed promptly to avoid safety hazards or to protect Park District property; or
- which are not generally described in other job descriptions; or
- when the amount of work exceeds the availability of Park District employees within the appropriate job classification.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to reach, walk, squat, and bend at the waist and knees.
- Ability to operate power machinery relative to job duties.
- Ability to apply pesticides safely.
- Ability to understand and complete record keeping and paperwork relative to job duties.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Qualifications
Education: A bachelor’s degree in horticulture, park and recreation management or a related field preferred, with at least two years' experience. A two-year associate's degree in this field and four years’ experience in park or grounds maintenance work may be considered. Although a degree is preferred, extensive experience in a similar position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement.
Experience: Must have experience in grounds maintenance and operating tractors, mowing equipment, and machinery used in grounds maintenance. Should have experience in using fertilizers and pesticides. Should have experience in building maintenance and the equipment and materials used in building maintenance. Supervisory experience is required.
Knowledge and Ability:
- A good knowledge of plant material, soil characteristics, and their requirements and of preventative maintenance procedures for grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Insight into good business management practices, personnel management, and public relations is necessary.
- Must be able to deal promptly and effectively with emergency situations.
- Knowledge of pesticides, fertilizers, and calibration equipment is necessary.
- Must demonstrate reliability, initiative, tact, and resourcefulness.
- Must obtain a valid pesticide applicator's license.
- Must obtain a valid Illinois State driver’s license.
- Personal – Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers.
