What are the responsibilities and job description for the Archivist for Special Collections and University Archives position at Pepperdine University?

The Archivist for Special Collections and University Archives provides managerial and curatorial oversight of the University Archives, with particular emphasis on the following activities: assuring intellectual control and access, collection development, the provision of research services, and collection preservation. The Archivist is responsible for carrying out the processing of archival collections, including the creation and updating of the Archives Processing Manual. The Archivist supervises student employees and graduate and undergraduate student interns. The Archivist also provides classroom instruction, in which archives materials are used to promote primary source literacy. This position, which enjoys faculty status, supports the University’s mission and strategic plan of promoting academic excellence and Christian values by providing access to primary source research collections, offering primary source information literacy training to students, and developing archival collections that reflect the university’s heritage.

Duties

  • Establish intellectual control of archival materials based on archival theory and research needs, including preservation, arrangement, description, and creation of finding aids.
  • Make collections accessible through publishing finding aids and promoting collections through infoguides, blog posts, and social media.
  • Create meaningful class sessions based on course syllabi; work with faculty to develop outside assignments that utilize Special Collections resources; prepare and teach sessions.
  • Provide public services to students, faculty, and scholars by offering research guidance, answering reference questions, developing research guides, and facilitating the reproduction of materials.
  • Develop a strong collection of library materials and primary sources for research use by conducting outreach to faculty, administrators, and donors and by assessing the historical research value of potential acquisitions.
  • Promote, publicize, and expand awareness of collections through exhibits, programs, written materials, displays, public lectures, workshops, tours, and other methods.
  • Participate in other department activities and projects such as writing grants, initiating digital projects, and engaging in multi-institutional collaboration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution; coursework in archival theory and practice; experience in a special collections department or archives; experience processing archival materials; supervisory experience; experience with reference services. An appreciation for and commitment to the university’s Christian mission and a desire to contribute to that mission; demonstrated commitment to diversity and experience promoting inclusive excellence; demonstrated sound judgment and emotional intelligence; knowledge of Describing Archives: A Content Standard; strong verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and ArchivesSpace; ability to work collaboratively Google Suite.

Preferred: Experience in an institutional archive; a record of professional contributions. Familiarity with XML editing Oxygen XML editor.

This is a Librarian, Exempt, 40 hour per week position.

Expected Pay Range: $64,480 - $70,000 per year

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level. In addition to base pay, Pepperdine offers a robust and highly competitive benefits package.
