Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Accounting Technician. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in performing advanced accounting, financial and payroll duties.
Responsibilities
- Leads accounting support activities including the review and verification of accounting documentation, ensuring accuracy in calculations, coding and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Responsible for account support in payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, and other special projects
- Prepares, maintains, and reconciles accounting, financial, and other records including invoices
- Audits projected revenues and expenses
- Verifies transactions and reconciles discrepancies
- Responds to request for information
- Frequent interaction with employees, other agencies, and the public through various media to resolve complex accounting support problems
- Verifies the work of other accounting support staff
- Trains less experienced personnel in the responsibilities of the work unit
- Provides support for external audits and auditors
- May collect fines and fees
- May audit travel claims for compliance with travel policies
- May handle and account for cash and prepare check run
- May supervise bookkeeping, clerical staff or temporary employees
Experience Required
- Four years of increasingly responsible accounting experience OR
- Associates' Degree in Accounting, Economics or Business and three years of increasingly responsible accounting experience OR
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Economics, Business, and two years of increasingly responsible accounting experience OR
- Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices
- Experience with automated accounting systems
- Knowledge of file maintenance procedures and practices
- Data entry skills
- Experience and knowledge of principles and practices of supervision
- Experience in performing and verifying mathematical computations
- Experience in using computerized budget /financial tracking and reporting programs and other software related to accounting
- Knowledge of working with a variety of office and computer equipment
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to format and generate revenue, spending, and cost reports
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
