What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Chemist position at Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc.?
Description:
Non-exempt. Chemist shall work under the guidance and direction of the Project Manager.
Duties
- Responsible to properly handle and identify unknowns.
- Segregate incompatible materials.
- Direct the consolidation of compatible materials and lab pack.
- Prepare lab pack identification documents associated with lab packs.
- Properly label and determine the appropriate recycling/disposal methods for the hazardous materials collected during the HHW management operations.
- Chemical engineer support of research & development.
- Laboratory support with analytical testing.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Degree in chemistry or a related field from an accredited college or a minimum of four (4) years of experience in conducting Household Hazardous Waste Community Collection Events (HHWCCE) and permanent collection site operations.
- OSHA HAZWOPER (24-40/hr.) with annual refreshers
- Completion of online or equivalent course in First Aid Basics
- Medically qualified/cleared to wear full or half face APR (Air purifying respirator)
- Ability to wear protective clothing. (Multiple layers of protective suits, gloves, particulate masks etc.)
- Participated in the identification, classification, and lab packing of chemicals and hazardous materials.
- PFF Medical Surveillance Program
- Respirator Fit Test Qualified (Annual)

Training
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER hazardous waste workers training course.
- OSHA 8-Hour HAZWOPER Annual Refresher
- PFF Quality Assurance - Level 1 Training

- PFF Personal Protective Equipment (SOP-007C)
- SOP-001C, General Safety Rules
- First Aid Basics course, online or equivalent.
- Forklift Operator Safety Training, I/C Powered, Sit Down Counterbalanced Lift Truck)
- Complete annual refresher training in proper management and shipping of hazardous waste that includes identification, classification, consolidation, labeling, packaging, lab packing, and recordkeeping. Training must include hazardous waste management, spill response, preparedness and prevention, and recordkeeping.
- Completion of initial comprehensive training in managing and transporting hazardous waste that includes hazardous waste identification, classification, consolidation, labeling, packaging, lab packing, land disposal restrictions, and recordkeeping.
Working Conditions
Continuous field/facility work required where there is potential for exposure to chemical, noise, dust and hot and cold temperatures. Climbing, walking and lifting will be normal daily requirements.
Salary : $25 - $35
