Position: Wheelhouse Captain - Tug Boat

About the Role
United Trades of America is seeking an experienced Wheelhouse Captain for a tug boat operation. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, technical, and operational expertise to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, crew, and tow. This role offers a competitive schedule and all travel costs (flights to and from the vessel) are fully covered by the company.
This position involves critical responsibilities in safety management, vessel operation, and crew performance, supporting dredge work, anchor handling, and barge towing along the US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico.
Principal Responsibilities
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, crew, and tow in compliance with company policies and all federal, state, and local laws.
- Conduct regular monthly drills and safety meetings as per company safety policies.
- Monitor crew performance, providing clear instructions and ongoing training to maintain safety and efficiency.
- Carry out duties assigned under the Vessel Security Plan as the designated Vessel Security Officer.
- Ensure all crew members are aware of the cargo, associated hazards, and proper handling procedures.
- Enforce company policies, safety guidelines, and the Crew Endurance Management System.
- Supervise and evaluate crew performance, participate in crew management, and oversee vessel budget.
- Maintain accurate and complete log entries and radio watch when required.
- Give clear assignments and direction to the Mate and/or Lead Deckhand.
- Provide updates to USCG personnel, land-based teams, and other key stakeholders as needed.
Qualifications
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard license: Master of Towing Near Coastal (minimum) or Oceans (preferred).
- 3-5 years of experience as Master of Towing, specifically in dredge support work, anchor handling, and tow lining barges coastwise.
- Ability to travel to/from vessels and training locations (must possess a valid driver's license).
- Active Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Must meet all USCG physical examination requirements.
- Ability to work for extended periods: sit, stand, climb steep stairs, and perform physical tasks.
Expected Hours of Work
- 28 days on / 14 days off rotation.
- Flexibility to adapt to varying schedules, including weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as needed.
