Position General Summary:
This position is dual-role and is a Non-Essential position at the facility. Employees hired into this position should contact their immediate supervisor/manager for directions on reporting to work during periods of poor environmental weather and road conditions.
The Employee Health Services (EHS) Nurse Clinician and Case Manager, under the direction of the Case Management Director, serves as an interdisciplinary team member to coordinate the delivery of health care services leading to quality outcomes for the inpatient, ambulatory surgery, and observation population and their families with the limits of financial and social resources available to the patient and his or her family. The Nurse Clinician provides direct and indirect nursing care for employees, contract employees, and non-employee groups, with particular emphasis on health maintenance and promotion of wellness. Will work in conjunction with other employee health nurses at sister facilities.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired concerning the personal, financial, medical, or employment status of patients and their families.
- Follow accepted safety practices for the patient and the hospital.
- Report safety hazards and initiate appropriate action.
- Participate in safety instructional programs.
- Perform medical necessity reviews following Interqual and/or MCG Milliman criteria and document findings in the medical record.
- Obtain precertification for all admissions requiring prior authorization.
- Complete a discharge planning assessment on all inpatients and arrange any needed post-acute care services.
- Provide financial counseling to patients and families regarding which medical insurance packages are best for the patient and walk them through the enrollment process.
- Investigate and work in collaboration with the Risk Manager and Human Resources in all aspects of employee injuries on the job.
- Maintain confidentiality with extreme professionalism and priority.
- Work closely with management to ensure that all health and safety standards are met in an effort to safeguard the health and wellbeing of employees.
- Monitor employee work-related illness and injury trends and assess, develop, and implement strategies to prevent work-acquired injury or illness and expedite return to work.
- Perform blood-borne pathogen exposure assessment, treatment, and follow-up.
- Participate in preventative screening programs (e.g., TB skin testing, influenza, hepatitis B, MMR, varicella, and other appropriate immunizations) and surveillance programs designed to identify and monitor risks to the employee’s health.
- Safely administer and appropriately document immunizations and TB skin tests given to employees per program guidelines.
- Perform communicable disease exposure follow-up.
- Identify and refer employees with personal health needs to the EHS MD, NP, or personal physician when appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge and skill in all aspects of immunizations for adults.
- Document patient care in an electronic medical record.
- Provide counseling and emotional support with compassion and respect for the individual in all aspects of employee healthcare issues.
- Conduct new employee health assessments and Respiratory Fit Testing.
Facility General Responsibilities:
- Attend facility new hire orientation as scheduled by HR.
- Complete Department Orientation Initial Competency within 7 days of hire date.
- Complete Department Initial Skills Competency within 90 days of hire date.
- Follow facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures.
- Respect cultural and religious practices of patients from all backgrounds.
- Follow HIPAA regulations at all times.
- Be punctual and dependable for assigned shifts.
- Dress within the dress code requirements of the facility.
- Identify all patients using at least two identifiers verbally (name and DOB), and by checking ID bracelet.
- Follow Hospital Wide and Department Specific policies and procedures.
- Must interact with physicians, guests, staff, and patients pleasantly, cooperatively, and effectively.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Theoretical knowledge of clinical processes, case management, and continuity of care.
- Motivation for self-direction.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership skills.
- Ability to relate to and work with chronically ill and disabled patients of all ages and with emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
- Ability to relate to and work with various managed care representatives, defining the continuing need for medical treatment.
- Ability to understand and integrate financial and medical needs of the patient.
- Ability to work closely with physicians and provide guidance regarding criteria and HMO requirements.
- Speak and read English fluently.
- Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.
- Knowledge and skill in all aspects of immunizations for adults working in the healthcare setting.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Ability to make knowledgeable clinical assessments and judgments.
- Ability to educate staff.
- Must possess initiative and ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of medical records.
Position Requirements: Education, Work Experience, Licensure, Certifications:
- Tennessee RN license. BSN preferred. Exceptions will be made only based on extensive experience.
- EH experience preferred.
- BLS required. ACLS and PALS preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.
