What are the responsibilities and job description for the Residential Camp Counselor position at Perry-Mansfield?
Overview
Perry-Mansfield is hiring up to 15 Residential Camp Counselors to work with our Emerging Artists, Young Artists, and Pre-Professional Intensives. You will work with your other counselors to ensure the safety of campers and a positive camp experience. Camp Counselors are a caretaker of a group of campers. Your responsibilities range from ensuring they get up in the morning for breakfast, make it to their classes, get their medications if needed, and ensure they are all in bed on time. Every day, you will play a variety of roles for the campers. Your position is one of the most important ones at camp since you are the front-line staff person who spends the most time with campers. Counselors live in the same dorm building as our younger campers or in nearby cabins for our older campers.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for ensuring the safety of campers in their care.
- Responsible for providing campers with clear information regarding rules, schedules, and camper responsibilities and ensuring that rules are followed.
- Guide students in the areas of scheduling.
- Responsible for always knowing the whereabouts of campers in their care.
- Will provide close supervision to campers during mealtimes.
- Responsible for organizing small group and campus-wide activities on the weekends with the support of the Camp Director.
- Responsible for being a good role model and encouraging teamwork, leadership, and good communication within a small community setting.
- Responsible for facilitating weekly cabin cleaning and group discussions when needed.
- Will check in with the camp nurse daily to verify that students requiring medication did take their dosage as prescribed.
- Will work closely with co-counselors to check class attendance and post any absences on the office board. Counselors are responsible for locating any student absent from class or activities without a written excuse.
- Will be readily available to students to answer questions, respond to concerns and provide crisis intervention when needed.
- Will speak with parents when appropriate to answer questions and give updates on a student’s health, progress, emotional status, etc.
- Responsible for doing written evaluations on each camper in their care at the conclusion of each session.
- Will attend weekly Counselor meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- A background in the performing arts is helpful.
- Must be at least 19 years old or have completed at least one year of college.
- Commitment to Perry-Mansfield’s mission, vision, and values • Ability to interpret, implement, and enforce all regulations.
- High levels of alertness, concentration, and initiative
- Organizational and time management skills
- At least one year at a performing arts summer camp is helpful.
- Certifications in CPR and First Aid.
- Must pass a background check.
- Must take online training classes offered through the Colorado Shines website before arriving (approximately 10 hours.) Physical Requirements:
- Able to stand, walk or sit for prolonged periods; occasionally stoop/bend
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Hours
This position requires engagement seven days a week. Counselors will be given at least one full day off each week. Specific days off will be determined in partnership with the Camp Director and other camp counselors.
Compensation
This seasonal position runs from June 2 – August 11 (approximately ten weeks). Compensation is $350 – $400 per week DOE. Room and Board are included with this position.
