Position Overview
The Behavioral Intervention Specialist (BIS) plays a critical role in supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by developing and implementing effective behavioral interventions. This position is responsible for crisis response, staff training, and ensuring compliance with OPWDD regulations. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, flexibility, and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people supported.
- Crisis Support & On-Call Responsibilities: Available 24/7 to provide emotional support and assist in crisis situations. Support de-escalation efforts both in person and via phone.
- Clinical Department Development & Supervision: Contribute to the development and oversight of the clinical department. Provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision to clinical staff including interns.
- Intake & Discharge Support: Participate in intake meetings and ensure thorough assessment as needed. Conduct observations and assessments to facilitate smooth transitions in and out of programs.
- Behavior Support Plan (BSP) Development and Monitoring: Colloborate with programs to develop, implement, and monitor BSP’s. Ensure BSP’s are person-centered, data-driven, and in compliance with OPWDD regulations. Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to ensure documentation is complete, analyze the data and develop trend reports.
- Staff Training & Development: Develop and facilitate trainings on BSPs, clinical interventions, de-escalation strategies, and more. Conduct hands-on staff training, modeling techniques, and in-person observations to ensure effective implementation.
- Person Specific & Group Support: Provide 1:1 behavioral support for people requiring additional clinical intervention. Facilitate group sessions covering self-advocacy, self-care, positive relationships, and other personal development topics.
- Committee Participation: Attend Incident Review Committee (IRC), Human Rights Committee (HRC), and Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings.
- Observations & Program Support: Conduct observations of people requiring additional behavioral and clinical support across all traditional programs as needed. Provide ongoing clinical support to programs, ensuring adherence to person-centered behavioral interventions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all clinical services and interventions align with OPWDD regulations and best practices.
- Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of people supported, ensuring they are receiving adequate services and support.
- Reporting: Ensure proper reporting, investigation, and review of all incidents relative to OPWDD Part 624 regulations and the New York State Justice Center.
- Professional Development: Complete all mandatory and assigned trainings as needed. Take initiative in asking for support in areas needed for development and enroll in training opportunities to assist with accomplishing professional goals.
- All other duties deemed necessary by the supervisor.
- Communication and Collaboration Promotes open communication within the team, resolves conflicts constructively, and ensures effective collaboration to achieve team objectives.
- Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Makes sound decisions that balance team needs with organizational goals. Delegates problem-solving tasks while providing guidance.
- Adaptability and Flexibility Guides the team through organizational changes, fostering resilience and adaptability among team members.
- Organizational Effectiveness Oversees operational workflows within the team, ensuring effectiveness in achieving objectives and meeting deadlines.
- Quality of Service Monitors team performance to ensure compliance with quality standards and emphasizes achieving person-centered outcomes.
- Age Requirement: Minimum age of 18.
- Experience:
- Minimum 1-5 years of experience working directly with people with developmental disabilities including developing, implementing, and maintaining Behavioral Support Plans (BSP), required.
- Meet the qualifications to approve Behavior Support plans set forth by OPWDD. See section 32 in the guidance for specifications. (i.e., LCSW), preferred.
- Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field (i.e., Social Work, Mental Health, etc.), preferred.
- SCIP-R certification, preferred. SCIP-R certification will be required upon hire and must be completed in the next available training session.
- On Call: Flexible availability, including on call 24/7, including varied hours (nights and weekends), in person and remote, required.
- Drivers Status: Valid Driver’s License, required
- Physical Demands: The nature of tasks may vary based on the individuals being supported. This may include assisting with toileting and hygiene, which could involve lifting. Reasonable accommodations will be considered to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill essential job functions.
