Summary Objective
Person County Government is recruiting for a part-time Machine Operator for Person Industries. The purpose of this position is to perform production tasks at the Person County Recycling Center by operating a fork lift, skid steer, working recycling sort line, and driving delivery/pick-up truck as needed. This employee supports production and maintenance activities at the manufacturing recovery facility (MRF).
This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position. Part-time employees cannot work more than 1000 hours per calendar year.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Must complete forklift and Driver Safety Training
- Knowledgeable and aware of forklift hazards and safety checks (battery, water, etc.)
- Operate assigned equipment in a safe manner
- Complete forklift inspections as needed and required by OSHA/NC Dept. of Labor
- Must be able to perform simple maintenance and repairs of equipment, and inform supervisor of needs
- Empty hoppers of recycling material, weigh bales, cleaning up single stream
- Transport completed production work from Person Industries to community and production contacts
- Assist and/or lead county and school recycling pickups
- Load and unload trucks as needed, with equipment and by hand
- Keep work areas and warehouse clean and organized
- Enforce all safety precautions throughout the day
- Empty all work area and warehouse trash daily
- Door greeter for customer assistance (give breaks, fill-in for coverage as needed)
- Operate sort line and process single stream recycling material
- Other miscellaneous duties as assigned (i.e., monitor liquid recycling station, tire recycling trailers, loads of wooden pallets, assist with bailing recycling material, electronic recycling, etc.)
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Employee must be 21 years of age or older
- Valid Driver’s License and Auto Insurance
- Acceptable background investigation
Special Certifications and Licenses
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Trained on Forklift, Skid Steer, Cascade Bulk Box Handler, Box Delivery Truck, Driving Safety, Client Rights, Fire Suppression and Behavior Modification, Defensive Driving
- Annual training will occur, including Policies and Procedures, Emergency Protocol, Drivers Safety and Distracted Driving, BBP, Fire Suppression, Client Rights, Confidentiality, Disability Awareness, and Cultural Competency
- Must know and demonstrate health and safety procedures and proper lifting techniques
- Must be aware of the need to make safety zones due to work population
Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following:
- A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
