Job Summary:
United Valley Pet Food is seeking a Food Safety Specialist to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and maintain the highest quality standards in our dry pet food production facility. This role focuses on implementing and monitoring food safety programs, including HACCP, GMPs, and FSMA compliance, to ensure the safety and consistency of our dry pet food products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and enforce food safety policies and procedures specific to dry pet food manufacturing in compliance with FDA, USDA, and AAFCO regulations.
- Conduct regular facility audits to ensure adherence to GMPs, HACCP, and sanitation protocols, with a focus on preventing contamination risks unique to dry food production.
- Monitor raw materials, in-process production, and finished products for food safety compliance, including moisture control, mycotoxin prevention, and proper extrusion/cooking temperatures.
- Train employees on food safety protocols, hygiene, and regulatory requirements, ensuring best practices in handling dry food ingredients.
- Investigate and document food safety incidents, customer complaints, and product recalls when necessary.
- Ensure proper sanitation and pest control measures, particularly in storage areas where dry ingredients are kept.
- Assist in regulatory inspections and third-party audits, preparing documentation as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of food safety programs, test results, and corrective actions.
- Work cross-functionally with production, quality control, and R&D teams to uphold food safety and quality standards.
- Stay up to date with food safety regulations and industry best practices, especially regarding extrusion processing, shelf stability, and dry food packaging integrity.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- HACCP certification required; PCQI certification preferred.
- 2 years of experience in food safety, quality assurance, or regulatory compliance in a dry food or pet food manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of FSMA, FDA, USDA, and AAFCO regulations.
- Experience with third-party audits such as SQF or BRC is a plus.
- Understanding of extrusion processes, ingredient traceability, and pathogen control in dry pet food.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
