Job Title: ACT Manager
Reports To: Shelter Manager
Supervises: Animal Care Technicians
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Manages all aspects of the day-to-day animal cleaning, feeding, enrichment, and rotation operations in dog and catland. Ensures that work is done in a timely fashion and following established SOPs and state laws
- This is a working, hands-on management position
- Acting as a MOD (Manager on Duty) to include supervise daily shelter operations including, but not limited to, staff supervision, administering necessary treatments and medications, adherence to cleaning protocols and procedures for disease prevention/control, assisting in other departments to include dog and cat land when short staffed, handling customer disputes, opening and/or closing of shelter, Supervisor on holiday rotation schedule.
- Assists with hiring, training, evaluating, supervising, and directing the activities of the Animal Care staff and volunteers to provide for their growth and to maximize the potential of all employees and volunteers for the good of Pet Helpers
- Works with management staff to create and implement various Animal Care Protocols and procedures and maintains this high standard of care
- Works closely with the Shelter Manager, Shelter Veterinary Technician, and Shelter Veterinarians to communicate any medical issues and ensure prescribed diet, medication, and treatment are being followed by the Animal Care Department
- Maintains a high standard of care for the maintenance of the shelter facility and grounds
- Participates as a supportive member of the Pet Helpers management team to identify health and safety concerns, temperament issues, safe and humane handling, and the adaptability of shelter animals
- Works collaboratively with all staff members to achieve the completion of daily work assignments, following proper shelter protocols; has accountability for measurable results within this area
- Establish and maintain ongoing animal care technician training
- Ensure a high level of communication/supervision with and maintain discipline and prescribed work performance standards of all animal care staff
- Foster a team environment by working effectively with all members of the organization to accomplish department and organization goals and objectives
- Regularly participates in and conducts meetings with other staff members to share ideas and suggestions designed to improve animal welfare, working conditions, and the programs of Pet Helpers.
- Work closely with Foster Managers to communicate animal needs on the floor and in foster care.
- Promotes team development to include daily, weekly, or monthly training of animal care staff (dog staff meetings, cat staff meetings, manager meetings, etc.)
- Assists in resolving and mitigating conflicts among staff, volunteers, fosters, adopters, and the public.
- Provides performance-related feedback and quality assurance, supported by direct observation and solicitation of feedback.
- Role model’s professionalism and mutual respect during all interactions.
- Develops, recognizes, and motivates staff, students, and volunteers.
- Ensures quality and consistency of internal and external messaging regarding protocols, positive reinforcement, and low-stress handling.
- Maintains and builds positive relations between all PH departments
- Acts in a confidential capacity as needed by the Shelter Manager and/or ED
- Treats animals humanely, with compassion and concern while assuring every animal receives the five freedoms.

Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour
