Youth Program Specialist
Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as a Youth Program Specialist. The position will focus on developing, coordinating, and implementing a variety of enriching outdoor programs for youth, including ORCA Camps, while fostering a supportive and engaging environment for growth and learning. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with youth, particularly in outdoor settings, and possess strong organizational and communication skills. This role provides an excellent opportunity to make a direct impact on youth development and environment stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Development and Coordination. Design and plan age-appropriate lessons, activities, and events for Youth Programs, including ORCA Camps. Ensure all activities support the developmental, social and emotional growth of participants, while meeting the philosophies of the programs.
- Program Management. Assist with day-to-day operations of youth programs, including record keeping, attendance reports, and ensuring the programs run smoothly.
- Registration and Participant Support. Assist with participant registration processes and provide ongoing support to families including assistance in completing financial aid applications,
- Program Sustainability. Maintain and organize program gear and materials in good working order. Collaborate on projects that support the sustainability of Youth Programs.
- Educational Outreach. Help with outreach efforts to promote outdoor play, recreation, and environmental education. Provide Tips and guidance to the community and families on the benefits of outdoor activities for children.
- Staff Training and Facilitation. Help lead and train staff in specialized outdoor activities and ensure they are equipped to provide a positive experience for youth participants.
- Professional Development. Participate in training opportunities to stay current with best practices in youth development., outdoor education, and safety protocols.
- Social and Emotional Development. Provide support for youth's social and emotional development, especially in a diverse group setting, helping to build resilience, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children and youth, especially in outdoor or recreational settings.
- Strong understanding of childhood development, with a focus on supporting social and emotional growth.
- Comfortable leading youth in outdoor activities and maintaining group management in natural environments.
- Familiarity with local flora and fauna and a passion for environmental education.
- First Aid and CPR certification (must be current or willing to obtain).
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Experience or willingness to lead and engage diverse groups of youth, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
Additional Requirements
- Training or certification in de-escalation techniques.
- American Camps Association Supervisor training.
- Ice and Cold Water Safety and Rescue (AMSEA certification or equivalent).
- Strengthening Families training.
- CCTHITA Biller training / orientation and CCPO biller training / orientation as needed.
- Must be able to pass a State of Alaska background check and a drug screen (including Marijuana).
Preferred Skills
- Previous experience in outdoor education, environmental programming, recreational programming, or youth leadership.
- Knowledge of local outdoor recreation opportunities and how to incorporate them into youth programs.
- A passion for promoting healthy, active lifestyles for youth and families.
