Job Description

Peterson Power Systems has a need for a Data Center Lead Field Technician.

SUMMARY

The Data Center Lead Field Technician performs repairs to Electrical Power Generation (EPG) equipment at designated customer locations and facilitates completion of large and complex projects in the field. This position also provides technical support, on the job training (OJT), repair procedures, and processes to Data Center Field Technicians and acts as back-up to Data Center Service Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain a safe working environment and observe all safety procedures, laws, policies, and rules.

  • Promote and work in a manner consistent with Contamination Control guidelines.

  • Support company safety and housekeeping standards.

  • Communicate with internal and external customers in a manner that promotes a positive relationship.

  • Perform the following field service operations with little to no supervision:

    • Follow manufacturer and company service guidelines and procedures to ensure quality work.

    • Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions.

    • Preserve and document component failure information for accurate failure analysis.

    • Perform pre-delivery setup, installation, and start-up on all makes and models of Caterpillar engines, generators, and related products.

    • Repair, replace, and rebuild engines and related systems and components of Cat and Non-Cat products in Industrial and EPG applications.

    • Perform inspections on equipment as needed.

    • Write service reports that accurately document activities.

    • Prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and timecards in an accurate and timely manner to enable other employees to do their job in a timely manner.

    • Provide technical support and OJT for other Data Center Field Technicians in the field.

    • Open and close all shop work orders with-in 7 days from last day of labor (LDL).

    • Track large or special customer jobs through repair process to insure they are completed in a timely manner, parts are ordered properly, repairs are done accurately, and safe.

    • Keep manager informed and updated on daily field operations and possible problem situations, including any redo.

    • Maintain ongoing customer service relation business plan with Data Center Service Manager, insuring technicians are aware of their responsibility to customer service.

    • Maintain excellent communications and cooperation with all co-workers, management, and other company departments.

    • Oversee work-in-process being performed in the field, testing, and final preparation for delivery of repaired products.

    • Report lost, broken, or stolen equipment to the service manager.

    • Provide written recommendations to service manager for needed improvement for field tooling and/or equipment.

    • Attend meetings to review:

      • Completion and accuracy of service reports

      • Flat rates

      • Service updates, policies, etc.

      • Problem areas

      • Parts inventory

      • Training, communications, and working relationships.

  • Assist Service Manager with performance evaluations and feedback of observations of technicians in the field.

  • Act as backup Data Center Service Manager as needed

  • Solicit information regarding opportunities for engine system sales and service and pass information to engine systems Sales staff and Product Support Sales Representative (PSSR) in a timely manner.

  • Operate company, rental, and/or personal vehicle as needed to transport parts and equipment and perform other field service duties.

  • Ensure assigned company, personal, and/or rental vehicles maintain a clean professional appearance and is in proper working order.

  • Attend scheduled technical training and safety training in person or online (virtual).

  • Work overtime as needed within labor law guidelines.

  • Travel up to 100% of the time to meet customer service requirements including overnight stays and out of territory travel.

  • Be on call to respond to customer service needs during the evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Maintain punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s Degree from a fully accredited college or certificate from technical/vocational school in Diesel Technology or other closely related fields; and a minimum of seven (7) years of directly related experience in power generation or commercial engine service; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Completion of a certified electrical safety course

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

  • Ability to obtain lift truck operator certificate
