Petro Star Inc., a subsidiary of ASRC, operates refineries in North Pole and Valdez, serving the needs of Alaskan customers throughout the state.  Our North Pole Refinery built in 1985 is a 22,000 bbl/day facility, producing heating fuel, kerosene, diesel, jet fuels, and asphalt base oil for the Interior and Northern Alaska communities.  Our Valdez Refinery built in 1993 processes 60,000 bbl/day to produce ultra-low sulfur diesel, jet fuel, JP-8, JP-5, marine diesel, heating fuel and turbine fuel for Alaska’s South Central and South West regions.  Both refineries process North Slope crude oil.

JOB SUMMARY

The Lab Specialist position is located in North Pole, Alaska.  The lab specialist will be responsible for refinery process and product sampling and performing chemical and physical analyses on quality control, process, environmental, and refined product samples. This Specialist will be responsible for data review, advanced instrument calibrations, inventory management, and quality control data charting.  Other responsibilities will include special projects plus maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment.  The specialist will perform duties of the lab director as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  • Work Monday through Friday with some weekend coverage.  Additionally, cover shifts for lab technicians when needed.
  • Collect samples from refinery product streams and petroleum fuel storage tanks outdoors in adverse weather conditions including -40 degrees and 20 hours of darkness in winter.  
  • Log samples in to lab sample log sheets and test samples according to specified ASTM methods to support the refinery operation.  
  • Perform testing and certification of fuel samples from other locations within Petro Star Inc and its sister companies.
  • Verify and communicate test results, and make entries into instrument logs, laboratory worksheets, and any other media required to ensure validity and traceability of information.
  • Communicate effectively with refinery manager, operations director, terminal manager, operators and other lab customers to meet customer needs.
  • Participate in data review process to ensure data accuracy on reports.
  • Install, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instruments to ensure reliable operation of the lab equipment.  Ensure timely repairs and minimum downtime on critical instruments.
  • Prepare test reagents according to ASTM test methods and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain internal Quality Control and Lab Control samples for continued laboratory quality assurance. Maintain control charts, calibrations, and standardization of solutions to ensure analytical data quality.
  • Maintain DOT/IATA HazMat shipper certifications.
  • Write, evaluate, and improve Laboratory SOP documents. Develop new test methods and recommend lab process improvements.
  • Train and mentor lab technicians and operators working in the lab.
  • Carry out above responsibilities, and all others which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support of and adherence to the Company's policies and procedures.
  • Follow all Petro Star Inc safety guidelines and initiatives including safe work practices, wearing required personal protective equipment, and lab chemical hygiene.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other science field. (10 years lab experience may be considered in place of science degree).
  • 5 years laboratory experience required.
  • Proven experience organizing or managing people and tasks to work together.
  • Proven mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation knowledge and experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Proven ability to apply statistical analysis to data sets to support lab quality control objectives.
  • Must be willing to live in North Pole / Fairbanks area or a reasonable distance from the Refinery.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and working telephone.
Preferred:
  • Supervisory experience
  • Refinery laboratory experience
  • GC software application knowledge
  • Asphalt binder testing experience
