Position Overview
The technician supervisor position is an RVT (or pursuing your RVT) who will supervise and coordinate the veterinary technician staff in all the departments of the hospital. This includes the overnight shift and swing shifts. The technician supervisor must have knowledge and skill in all areas of nursing care in order to direct, plan, organize and perform a variety of duties concerned with animal health, client care, and client education.
Reports To: Practice Manager, Technician Manager
Qualifications
California Certification (RVT) is required for this position. Ability to lift 50lbs unassisted, and ability to stand, kneel, squat and bend for extended periods of time. Must be willing to rotate shifts and work some swings and weekends/ holidays. A four day a week/ 10 hour day schedule is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operations
- Work with Practice Manager and Technician manager to assure consistency of procedures, policies, and medical standards on all shifts
- Maintain communication between different areas of the hospital and between shifts
- Direct and assist technicians and technician assistants in their performance of animal care and client care tasks
- Assist in prioritizing and planning scheduled procedures in all areas of the hospital
- Supervise technicians and technician assistants in the delivery of nursing care to ensure the highest level of care for all our patients
- Oversee completion of daily treatments
- Oversee completion of daily checklists and maintenance logs
- Educate/train technicians and technician assistants in their delivery of medical/ nursing care
- Stay on the leading edge of new medical and patient care industry knowledge by reading, attending continuing education and bring new and updated information to hospital management; recommend any changes that should be made for the benefit of our patients or clients
- Oversee technician internship program and technician mentoring program
Human Resources
- Assist working interviews to assess team fit and technical experience of applicants and provide feedback to technician manager for hiring review
- Partner with technician manager to ensure training schedules for new hires are followed, and that roles, responsibilities, and culture are clarified through the training process
- Participate in and provide relevant input in staff meetings and other department meetings as needed
- Mediate grievances between technicians and other hospital personnel; coaching and conduct/ discipline issues will be handled by the Practice Manager and/or technician manager with assistance from the technician supervisors if needed
- Assist with employee skill assessments and performance reviews
- Maintain positive morale, positive recognition of technicians and team atmosphere
Scheduling
- Assist other supervisors with scheduling to ensure adequate technician and technician assistant staffing for the hospital. Assist with vacation requests.
- Monitor overtime, tardiness and absenteeism
- Work with other technician supervisors to manage staffing needs/ changes and facilitate cross training
- After hours, weekend and holiday phone coverage will be shared among Technician Supervisors, Technician Manager, and Practice Manager
Client Care
- Ensure exceptional customer service at all levels of communication with clients- verbal, written, and other
- Respond to client questions and handle client complaints
- Teach and model a client-centric approach for all technicians
Technical
- Must be able to perform all duties of the veterinary technician as needed

The Technician Supervisor:
- Reliable, highly organized, and adaptable to changes within the hospital
- Must have exceptional communication and leadership skills
- Will serve as the representative of the hospital, displaying consideration, courtesy, compassion, and professionalism in all interactions with clients, patients, and all hospital staff
- Must understand and support the hospital's mission and overall direction
- Must present a neat, well-groomed appearance
- Ability to solve problems independently and display excellent judgment
- Must have at least three years of experience as a veterinary technician
