Peyton School District is dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services to our students. We are seeking an experienced Transportation Director to lead our transportation department and ensure the highest standards of safety, service, and operational excellence.
Position Summary
The Transportation Director oversees all aspects of the district's student transportation services, including daily school bus operations, extracurricular and athletic trip transportation, fleet maintenance, driver management, and transportation budget administration. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, transportation expertise, and a commitment to student safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate the district's comprehensive student transportation program, including daily routes, special education transportation, and extracurricular trips
- Supervise, train, and evaluate transportation staff, including bus drivers, mechanics, and administrative personnel
- Develop and implement transportation policies, procedures, and safety protocols in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, and inspection of all district transportation vehicles
- Create and optimize bus routes for efficiency while ensuring student safety and timeliness
- Manage the transportation department budget, including forecasting needs, monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities
- Coordinate with school administrators, athletic directors, and other staff regarding transportation for field trips, athletic events, and other extracurricular activities
- Respond to and resolve parent, staff, and community concerns regarding transportation services
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards
- Develop and maintain accurate records of vehicle maintenance, driver certifications, student ridership, and other required documentation
- Participate in emergency response planning and execution for district transportation needs
- Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in school transportation
Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, or ability to obtain within six months of hire
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding student transportation
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
- Experience with budget management and resource allocation
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage emergency situations
- Familiarity with vehicle maintenance and repair procedures
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged sitting or standing, moderate lifting, and other physical exertion
- Must pass required physical examination and drug/alcohol screening
- Vision and hearing sufficient to operate vehicles and communicate effectively
