Routing Specialist Department/School: Transportation

Primary Purpose:

Coordinate routing of pupil transportation for regular and special needs programs districtwide to ensure safe, efficient, timely, and economical
transportation services.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience/Education/Certification):

High School Diploma or GED; clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements; at least 21 years
of age; 2 years’ experience as certified school bus driver.

Major Responsibilities:

Routes and Schedules
1. Layout and schedule all district bus routes in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines. Ensure that all changes or additional bus

runs are consistent with district policies, guidelines, and procedures.
2. Provide necessary information for supervisors to develop the selection and assignment of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and driver

substitutes for morning and afternoon shifts as directed by the transportation director.
3. Post route schedules and state required route descriptions. Ensure that an accurate description of the morning and afternoon route is

carried on each bus.
4. Assist in collecting information to update the district map within the routing software with all new streets, subdivisions, apartment

complexes, new attendance boundaries, and new campuses.Prepare and update district maps showing areas served by each bus.
Distribute maps to schools and to the public as directed.

Communication
5. Coordinate with district staff to prepare for routing changes associated with new programs or changes in program locations. Notify drivers,

parents, and school personnel of any changes in a student’s bus service such as an address change, change in pick-up and drop-off
location, change in time or bus change. Help campuses to place new students on buses and advise drivers of new or dismissed students.

6. Communicate with drivers and supervisors about ongoing route changes that will be necessary for balancing routes, navigating new road
construction, and adjusting for increasing or decreasing levels of student ridership.

7. Actively engage in online webinars, training sessions, and annual software training conferences to maintain and enhance knowledge of

routing software.
8. Serve as substitute bus driver as needed, meeting the expectations for effectively and safely operating a bus.
9. Follow Educator Code of Conduct & all policies, procedures, laws and State/Federal regulations.
10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

Ability to use software to develop route schedules, spreadsheets, and databases and do word processing 
Ability to read and understand documents including policies and procedures manuals 
Ability to receive and give written and verbal instructions 
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam 
Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); school
bus; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking, climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing,
wrist flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) on a daily basis
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work early shift; may work irregular and prolonged
hours
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
