Department Overview

The Environmental Management (EM) department is focused on helping PG&E’s operational crews protect natural and cultural resources and maintain regulatory compliance with environmental laws while performing critical electric and gas infrastructure maintenance. Approximately 50 professional biologists work throughout the Company to achieve this goal.

The Short Cycle / Vegetation Management team is responsible for providing environmental support for routine operations and maintenance and vegetation management activities on the Company’s approximate 140,000 miles of electric distribution lines, 18,600 miles of electric transmission lines, and 47,000 miles of natural gas pipelines. We help construction crews complete their work in compliance with various laws, regulations, agency agreements, and other applicable commitments to protecting the natural world. To achieve that, most of our work involves crafting meaningful environmental protection measures and tools that crews can use to avoid or minimize their impacts on the environment. We also establish goals related to safety, customer service, affordability, land management, and environmental compliance that require a collaborative, cross-functional effort between employees across environmental disciplines and, ultimately, the Company as a whole.

Position Summary

The Short Cycle / Vegetation Management biology group is seeking a talented, goal-oriented summer intern to work on several important initiatives.  These include :

  • Updating educational “tailboards” that are used to teach construction crews about special-status species they may encounter on job sites,
  • Updating our Salesforce-based data management system used to generate technical reports, and
  • Biological field work tasks as assigned.

Through these duties, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn about California’s rare species, their legal statuses, and how the utility industry manages compliance with various environmental laws, regulations, and agency agreements; these include the Federal Endangered Species Act, the California Endangered Species Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and various special use permits that PG&E maintains with multiple State and federal agencies.

Additional duties will vary based upon the successful candidate’s skills and interests but may include special-status species and nesting bird surveys, wetland assessments, construction monitoring for environmental compliance, construction personnel environmental training (i.e. presenting tailboards to crews), and technical report generation and editing.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead and / or support activities as described above, working with a team of experienced biologists.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Environmental Management organization at PG&E through the work they perform.
