What are the responsibilities and job description for the Analytical Chemist position at Phaxtec, Inc.?
PHAXTEC is a start-up commercializing and marketing novel natural materials based on Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) that can replace fossil and non-biodegradable plastics. PHA can replace more than 50% (210 million tonnes) of the world’s fossil plastics in single applications such as packaging, personal care, and agriculture and in durable uses such as textiles, sports equipment, automotive, electrical and electronics. The protected PHAXTEC process uses renewable and abundantly available greenhouse gases to produce PHA.
As part of its growth PHAXTEC is looking for a team member to assist in chemical analysis of polymers. The successful candidate develops experimental workflows for characterization of polymers.
The successful candidate would have at least a Masters (PhD preferred) in relevant field, with relevant and significant experience in the use of GC, HPLC, GPC, DSC, TGA, NMR, and other related instruments and test equipment to evaluate and characterize polyolefins, polyesters and similar polymers, their compounds, and additives. Bio-based polymer (PLA, PBS, PHA, TPS) and polymer adhesives, dispersions and/or coatings experience would be a plus.
Strong computational skills are desired. Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills are required. The person will be self-driven and expected to communicate with the R&D staff, non-scientists, and business leaders internally and externally.
Responsibilities include hands on analyzing and characterizing various polymers and chemicals produced and/or added to compounds of polymers, specially PHA, PLA, PBS, TPS or related polymers. He/she will contribute directly to the understanding and the development and scaling of PHA biopolymer compounds and dispersions in conjunction with partners and customers.
The successful candidate would have 2-5 years of hands-on experience in the field and assist biologists, engineers and chemists that develop and commercialize such products.
Experience with having set up relevant laboratories, equipment and instruments and managing technicians and engineers would be a plus.
Compensation for the position commensurate with qualifications, experience, and background, and include stock options to participate in the success of the start-up.
