General Summary
- The Nursing Supervisor is delegated the authority and responsibility for administrative supervision of hospital activities on the assigned shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assesses staffing needs for patient care areas and re-directs personnel as appropriate.
- Coordinates with emergency department, registration and nursing units to ensure patients are admitted in a timely and efficient manner.
- Coordinates emergency surgeries.
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of cardiac arrest procedures, fire and disaster procedures and assumes a lead role in directing hospital personnel when initiated. Advises and assists nurses in administering new or unusual treatments. Is available to the nursing staff to answer questions.
- Demonstrates adaptability in dealing with unexpected situations with appropriate problem solving skills.
- Demonstrates the ability to utilize most cost effective staffing approach in conjunction with patient census.
- Interprets hospital policy and regulations to hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
- Monitors nursing units throughout shift and modifies staffing as necessary. Knowledgeable of specific staffing needs and budgeted staffing pattern to achieve staffing goals.
- Makes frequent rounds to observe patient care and staff performance. Provides information to Director regarding employee's behaviors for incorporation in performance reviews. As problems or situations develop within the Nursing Department and/or other departments, Nursing Supervisor is responsible for a temporary solution and communicating these facts to the appropriate supervisor, or Director. Records all call-ins in the appropriate manner.
- Obtains medications and/or supplies, including medical records, needed from other departments to maintain safe, effective and therapeutic care to patients.
- Places admitted patients in appropriate beds on designated units, identifying any potential issues with acuity or service provided.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Work Experience
- Three to five years of clinical registered nursing experience required. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support required.
- ACLS preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
