General Summary
- The Echo/Vascular Sonographer will provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Echo/Vascular Sonographer includes cardiac and vascular procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, and as outlined in the departmental policy and procedure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, contrast agent administration, safe patient handling and movement, critical findings notification, etc. to insure that patient care is provided in an optimally safe environment.
- Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
- Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
- Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area, and maintains adequate supplies. This includes informing the appropriate person when equipment malfunctions, cleaning the US machines regularly including the filters and notify the appropriate person when department supplies need reordered.
- Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation. To include keeping the quality assurance up to date in a timely manner.
- Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
Education
- Graduate of a Cardiac\ Vascular Sonographer program required.
Work Experience
- One year experience in Adult Cardiac or Vascular sonography required.
Certification/License
- RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer) and/or RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. BLS through the American Heart Association.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Requires frequent standing for long periods of time, walking, and lifting up to 150lbs. It also involves pushing, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Considerable mental concentration for long periods of time.
Working Conditions
- Constant exposure to infectious disease and other hazardous conditions.
