General Summary
The Medical Assistant Trainee program (MA Academy) is a full-time on-the-job training program with full-time pay and benefits. It is designed for candidates with no direct patient care experience who want to begin their career in an outpatient (clinic) setting. This program consists of: HOURS: New MA trainees will start at Phelps Health New Employee Orientation on Monday, March 31, 2025, and continue training on a full-time Monday-Friday daytime schedule for 6 weeks. General Summary
- 6 weeks of Monday-thru-Friday paid training under the supervision of the Clinical Education Department or designee.
- Once the new Medical Assistant (MA) successfully completes this training, they will transition into a regular MA position in one of our clinics.
- After this, new MAs will transition into a full-time day-shift position in one of our clinics, working Monday through Friday, no weekends or holidays.
- Interviews will be held:
- Tuesday, March 4th from 9:30am-11am, and
- Friday, March 7th from 2pm-3:30pm in person at Phelps Health.
- Selected applicants will be offered a spot in the MA Academy by Friday, March 7th.
- Upon acceptance, they will be required to complete a pre-employment screening (as with any new hire) on Friday, February 28th, and to begin their Phelps Health employment with New Employee Orientation, starting on Monday, March 31st.
- The Medical Assistant functions within his/her skill set in providing patient care as delegated by the clinic LPN/RN, physician or mid-level provider (APP). Must be well organized, display’s a high level of professionalism, excellent customer service skills, detail oriented, able to multitask efficiently, critical thinker and able to perform in a fast-paced work environment.
- Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, notification of the licensed nurse when patient condition changes to ensure that patient care is provided in an optimally safe environment.
- Provides direct interaction to patients in the clinic including escorting patients to rooms, obtaining vital signs, EKG’s, verification of medications, allergies, past medical/surgical/family history and chief complaint/visit reason according to provider preference, documenting accurate information in the patient chart in a timely manner.
- Routes phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Acts as a general liaison between physician/APP and patient. Calls patients with normal/abnormal test results, answer’s questions and assisting physician with return calls.
- Assists with renewal and authorization of medications and administers medications (oral, IM and SQ) as ordered.
- Performs point of care lab testing and obtains blood samples and other specimens for lab testing as ordered.
- Schedules appointments, surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and admissions (remove) as ordered by the physician. Completes necessary paperwork, prior authorization, referrals and documentation in a timely manner.
- Monitors supply inventory, assuring adequate supplies, cleans and stocks exam areas.
- Informs and sets up patients and/or guardian for My Chart at the time of service and informs and educates patients regarding the benefits of signing up for My Chart.
- Assists in orientating and training new medical assistants.
- Meets commitments, works independently, accepts accountability, handles change, sets personal standards, stays focused under pressure, works as a team and assists all team members (remove), and meets attendance/punctuality requirements.
- High school diploma required.
- Medical Clinic experience preferred but not required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required (provided through training program).
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
